Conceived as a remodel and addition, the final design iteration for this home is uniquely multifaceted. Structural considerations required a more extensive tear down, however the clients wanted the entire remodel design kept intact, essentially recreating much of the existing home. The overall floor plan design centers on maximizing the views, while extensive glazing is carefully placed to frame and enhance them. The residence opens up to the outdoor living and views from multiple spaces and visually connects interior spaces in the inner court. The client, who also specializes in residential interiors, had a vision of ‘transitional’ style for the home, marrying clean and contemporary elements with touches of antique charm. Energy efficient materials along with reclaimed architectural wood details were seamlessly integrated, adding sustainable design elements to this transitional design. New homeowners wanted to remove the modern. Some architectural detail remained after a remodel a few years ago, but there was still potential for more of the details to reflect their traditional tastes. So we kept going! We added moldings, built-ins, an historical arch, a facelift for the stairs, color drenching in the living room, and lots of unlacquered brass. We drenched the living room in color, created an arched separation to dining room, with new wainscot, and an inviting window seat.

In the adjoining living space, a back-lit accent TV wall with curved plaster panels creates a dramatic focal point. Behind it, a wood grain wallpaper adds subtle texture and depth. Luxurious Roche Bobois blue leather sofas anchor the room, while a lemon-yellow accent chair infuses playful energy. Hand-tufted abstract rugs in blue and gray, along with a sculptural black metal coffee table with smoked glass tops, tie the eclectic palette together. The result is a modern, layered great room that balances comfort with bold sophistication.
