McLean QuinlanDesigned in 1805 by renowned architect Sir John Nash, this Grade II listed former coach house in the Devon countryside, sits on a south-facing hill, with uninterrupted views to the River Dart.
Though retaining its classical appeal and proportions, the house had previously been poorly converted and needed significant repair and internal reworking to transform it into a modern and practical family home. The brief – and the challenge – was to achieve this while retaining the essence of Nash’s original design.
We had previously worked with our clients and so we had a good understanding of their needs and requirements. Together, we assessed the features that had first attracted them to the property and advised on which elements would need to be altered or rebuilt.
Preserving and repairing where appropriate, interior spaces were reconfigured and traditional details reinterpreted. Nash’s original building was based on Palladian principals, and we emphasised this further by creating axial views through the building from one side to the other and beyond to the garden.
The work was undertaken in three phases, beginning with the conversion and restoration of the existing building. This was followed by the addition of two unashamedly contemporary elements: to the west, a glazed light-filled living space with views across the garden and, echoing the symmetry of Nash’s original design, an open pergola and pool to the east.
The main staircase was repositioned and redesigned to improve flow and to sit more comfortable with the building’s muted classical aesthetic. Similarly, new panelled and arched door and window linings were designed to accord with the original arched openings of the coach house.
Photographing the property again, twenty years after our conversion, it was interesting to see how once-new additions and changes have long settled into the character of the house. Outside, the stone walls and hard landscaping we added, are softened by time and nature with mosses and ferns. Inside, hardwearing limestone floors and the crafted joinery elements, particularly the staircase, are improving with the patina of wear and time.

Laure Nell InteriorsThe homeowners of this 6,000-square-foot house in Delray Beach don’t have to go far for a night out on the town. We transformed two bedrooms with a connecting bathroom into an entertainment wing with a true speakeasy vibe, right down to the hidden bookcase door that makes its entrance from the main living room quasi invisible. A moody, deep navy wallpaper with copper accents envelops the walls and layers together with rich woods and dark hues from floor to ceiling. The new movie room features custom built-ins, a home bar, a billiards table and the owners’ collection of vinyl records punctuated with a piece of Beatles-themed art that we sourced as an homage to the owners’ love of iconic films and music. The custom built-in wine fridge in the adjacent wine room houses their 250-plus collection of unique bottles the owners bring back from their frequent travels around the world. We pulled the moody palette into other areas of the home that needed reimagining, including the double-height living room, where we clad the fireplace in black and white materials and specified Tom Dixon’s lustrous Melt pendants to cascade over the space. Board & VellumThis intimate sitting room almost has a Venetian feel, with ornate light fixtures, artful exposed beams, an open hearth, and an arched niche carved into the landing of the stairs.
Nicole Arnold InteriorsNewly relocated from Nashville, TN, this couple’s high-rise condo was completely renovated and furnished by our team with a central focus around their extensive art collection. Color and style were deeply influenced by the few pieces of furniture brought with them and we had a ball designing to bring out the best in those items. Classic finishes were chosen for kitchen and bathrooms, which will endure the test of time, while bolder, “personality” choices were made in other areas, such as the powder bath, guest bedroom, and study. Overall, this home boasts elegance and charm, reflecting the homeowners perfectly. Goal achieved: a place where they can live comfortably and enjoy entertaining their friends often!
Everything HomeOur Carmel design-build studio planned a beautiful open-concept layout for this home with a lovely kitchen, adjoining dining area, and a spacious and comfortable living space. We chose a classic blue and white palette in the kitchen, used high-quality appliances, and added plenty of storage spaces to make it a functional, hardworking kitchen. In the adjoining dining area, we added a round table with elegant chairs. The spacious living room comes alive with comfortable furniture and furnishings with fun patterns and textures. A stunning fireplace clad in a natural stone finish creates visual interest. In the powder room, we chose a lovely gray printed wallpaper, which adds a hint of elegance in an otherwise neutral but charming space.

Lori Delisle Interior Design & DecoratingMy client's mother had a love for all things 60's, 70's & 80's. Her home was overflowing with original pieces in every corner, on every wall and in every nook and cranny. It was a crazy mish mosh of pieces and styles. When my clients decided to sell their parent's beloved home the task of making the craziness look welcoming seemed overwhelming but I knew that it was not only do-able but also had the potential to look absolutely amazing.
We did a massive, and when I say massive, I mean MASSIVE, decluttering including an estate sale, many donation runs and haulers. Then it was time to use the special pieces I had reserved, along with modern new ones, some repairs and fresh paint here and there to revive this special gem in Willow Glen, CA for a new home owner to love.
