Mister Chop Shop is a men's barber located in Bondi Junction, Sydney. This new venture required a look and feel to the salon unlike it's Chop Shop predecessor. As such, we were asked to design a barbershop like no other - A timeless modern and stylish feel juxtaposed with retro elements. Using the building’s bones, the raw concrete walls and exposed brick created a dramatic, textured backdrop for the natural timber whilst enhancing the industrial feel of the steel beams, shelving and metal light fittings. Greenery and wharf rope was used to soften the space adding texture and natural elements. The soft leathers again added a dimension of both luxury and comfort whilst remaining masculine and inviting. Drawing inspiration from barbershops of yesteryear – this unique men’s enclave oozes style and sophistication whilst the period pieces give a subtle nod to the traditional barbershops of the 1950’s.

basement industrial style with cosy and warm light ambience

In keeping with the contemporary Art Deco style used throughout the basement, we used this framed tiled design with Art Deco mirror and bathroom fixtures. With a two meter width and just under three meter ceilings the space looks and feels comfortable.

Our client bought a Hacienda styled house in Hove, Sussex, which was unloved, and had a dilapidated pool and garden, as well as a tired interior. We provided a full architectural and interior design service through to completion of the project, developing the brief with the client, and managing a complex project and multiple team members including an M and E consultant, stuctural engineer, specialist pool and glazing suppliers and landscaping designers. We created a new basement under the house and garden, utilising the gradient of the site, to minimise excavation and impact on the house. It contains a new swimming pool, gym, living and entertainment areas, as well as storage and plant rooms. Accessed through a new helical staircase, the basement area draws light from 2 full height glazed walls opening onto a lower garden area. The glazing was a Skyframe system supplied by cantifix. We also inserted a long linear rooflight over the pool itself, which capture sunlight onto the water below. The existing house itself has been extended in a fashion sympathetic to the original look of the house. We have built out over the existing garage to create new living and bedroom accommodation, as well as a new ensuite. We have also inserted a new glazed cupola over the hallway and stairs, and remodelled the kitchen, with a curved glazed wall and a modern family kitchen. A striking new landscaping scheme by Alladio Sims has embeded the redeveloped house into its setting. It is themed around creating a journey around different zones of the upper and lower gardens, maximising opportunities of the site, views of the sea and using a mix of hard and soft landscaping. A new minimal car port and bike storage keep cars away from the front elevation of the house. Having obtained planning permission for the works in 2019 via Brighton and Hove council, for a new basement and remodelling of the the house, the works were carrried out and completed in 2021 by Woodmans, a contractor we have partnered with on many occasions.

On the ground floor and with a pleasant outlook overlooking the landscaped front garden is a bespoke Bulthaup kitchen with Miele appliances and designated breakfast area. The kitchen links perfectly to a spacious and wonderfully bright dining room which in turn provides access to the rear garden.

The basement garage was converted into a bright home office / guest bedroom with an en-suite tadelakt wet room. With concrete floors and teak panelling, this room has clever integrated lighting solutions to maximise the lower ceilings. The matching cedar cladding outside bring a modern element to the Georgian building.

A second kitchen was requested for this basement for the nanny's personal use as well as to have refreshments and snacks for the entertaining room nearby. In addition, we went further setting the room us as a utility room if needed.

Restructuration et aménagement d'un sous sol de 44 m² dans une maison familiale située à Vitry-sur-Seine (94). ​ Les clients ont fait appel à l'ATELIER I L N pour réaliser "un dossier de présentation". Nous avons décidé que le sous-sol détenait le potentiel suffisant pour répondre aux attentes des clients (buanderie, 2ème toilette, zone de stockage, espace convivial, espace musique, espace pour télétravailler). Pour apporter une réponse complète à ces problématiques, l'atelier ILN propose alors les axes de travail suivants : Répondre aux contraintes thermiques (isolation...) Répondre aux besoins de second-œuvres et leurs mises en œuvre (revêtement du sol...) Répondre aux besoins en lien avec le fonctionnement (électricité) Répondre à des besoins d’usage (buanderie...). Atelier ILN élabore ce projet en fonction d’un cahier des charges qui reprend : les choix des clients, les contraintes budgétaires, techniques et parfois réglementaires. ​

Our client wanted to make use of the cellar underneath the victorian Hotel Bar and restaurant. Knowing there has been a wealth of art, comedy and music in the venue our proposal was a listening room. Taking inspiration from our passion of Japanese listening rooms we set about designing a space which is acoustically treated for the custom designed Hifi. The space is used for film, DJ`S, Events and private functions. We are please to have supplied the design ethos, technology to deliver the room a musical experience like no other commercial basement in Essex.
