The sliding doors were removed and the hot water radiator relocated to enrich the functionality and beauty of the kitchen. Glass tiles, leaded glass doors, polished granite, interior cabinet lighting, new ceiling lighting along with cabinets that reach the ceiling were designed to visually expand the space. Reflective surfaces assist in expanding the space, as do glass doors because the mind peers beyond the door's face surface. White cabinets and trim with just enough detail and accent so as not to numb the emotion with a hospital quality further expands the sense of the kitchen space. Creativity and an ability to think "outside the box" are necessary for these gems we describe as "row" homes. Restoration when done well is exciting; it's refreshing and delightful. We can not disassociate our emotions from our environments. Why should we? We should strive to be happy within beauty. Part of the Arts and Crafts Movement in America used as its' motto: the Beautiful, the Useful and the Enduring. For an artisan craftsman or designer the motto holds true today. A challenging heritage home renovation in a mature established Edmonton neighbourhood. We kept as much of the original charm and character details as possible while updating this old home. All the original doors and door knobs were refinished, the exposed fireplace and kitchen skylight were renovated, and the tin ceiling in the parlor was fully restored. The star of the renovation is the pressed quartz countertop in the kitchen. This beautiful translucent material transmits light and makes the most of a small kitchen footprint.

If you're looking for a more subdued color or design for your kitchen backsplash then perhaps this kitchen can serve as a stunning inspiration.
The single colored Subway Tile chosen for this project complements the homeowners Old English inspired trim pieces to create a beautiful and historical look.

We added oak where the old wall was and staggered the remaining tile into the new flooring. (The tile continues into the powder room, replacing it would have meant replacing that floor also.)

This Craftsman style kitchen displays warm earth tones between the cabinetry and various stone details. Richly stained quartersawn red oak cabinetry in a shaker door style feature simple mullion details and dark metal hardware. Slate backsplash tiles, granite countertops, and a marble sink complement each other as stunning natural elements. Mixed metals bridge the gap between the historical Craftsman style and current trends, creating a timeless look.
