hut design + buildThis is a New England beach house that is regularly confronted by severe nor'easters. The task was to provide a face-lift that could withstand the windblown salt and sand.
The existing exterior cladding consisted of 3 layers of wood clapboard and vertical shiplap siding.
The seal around the windows was significantly compromised causing a cold, drafty house to require extensive heating and expense.
We removed the 2 outer layers of existing siding to access the window flashing, which we sealed with membrane flashing. We then applied fiber cement panels and covering the vertical seams with Atlantic cedar battens.
UserLocated on the shoreline of Chichester and Langstone Harbours, a short walk from Emsworth, this two bedroom Deckhouse is a novel yet practical design dating from the 1960's. It is part of a unique development of deckhouses that were originally built as yachtsmen's weekend and holiday houses.
The deckhouses are set in a tranquil parkland setting that contains two natural ponds. The Sussex Border Path passes beside as it follows the contours of Chichester Harbour and Thorney Island.
The alterations included the installation of a new kitchen; the changes are sympathetic to the property.
Decorative PhilosophyKaren's passion for the venerable horseshoe crab has existed since childhood. Having rescued many by putting them gently back into the surf, the ones that have been lunch for the gulls, find their way to the wall by her studio entrance. Note the latest, the largest she has ever found, lower center, just the other day. Must be over 40 years old, and look at the barnacles!
The collection isn't all out here, the more delicate molts some as small as a baby's hand, are kept safely in boxes for drawing and nature studies.
So happy that in so many states, this incredible creature that remains unchanged since many years prior to when dinosaurs roamed the earth, are now protected. Many drug companies are formulating the blood in the lab now or at least taking it without harming the crabs.
I just love these creatures.
