Architecture & Interiors: Studio Esteta

Located in an enviable position within arm’s reach of a beach pier, the refurbishment of Coastal Beach House references the home’s coastal context and pays homage to it’s mid-century bones. “Our client’s brief sought to rejuvenate the double storey residence, whilst maintaining the existing building footprint”, explains Sarah Cosentino, director of Studio Esteta.
As the orientation of the original dwelling already maximized the coastal aspect, the client engaged Studio Esteta to tailor the spatial arrangement to better accommodate their love for entertaining with minor modifications.
“In response, our design seeks to be in synergy with the mid-century character that presented, emphasizing its stylistic significance to create a light-filled, serene and relaxed interior that feels wholly connected to the adjacent bay”, Sarah explains.
The client’s deep appreciation of the mid-century design aesthetic also called for original details to be preserved or used as reference points in the refurbishment. Items such as the unique wall hooks were repurposed and a light, tactile palette of natural materials was adopted. The neutral backdrop allowed space for the client’s extensive collection of art and ceramics and avoided distracting from the coastal views.

Stair Structure:
5/8" thick frameless glass railing
Metallic powder coating steel stringer
Whitestone treads

From this top-down perspective, the staircase becomes an architectural focal point—both functional and sculptural. The rich navy paint emphasizes the angular geometry of each tread, particularly the spiral configuration at the turn, which adds a dynamic rhythm to the ascent and descent. The warm texture of the natural fibre runner provides visual contrast and a tactile experience underfoot. Notably, the use of frameless glass balustrades in the lower section introduces a contemporary element that lightens the overall composition and allows natural light to travel more freely through the stairwell. Subtle wall detailing and crisp white surrounds complete the look with quiet elegance.

Our client chose a wool velvet by Ulster Carpets throughout six bedrooms, dressing rooms, landings and service staircases. The client opted for a bespoke taped stair runner carpet in Sisal by Crucial Trading from their Oriental collection to compliment the dark oak wood flooring, and age of the property. The carpet was cut to size on our first visit, taken to our workshop, and installed on our last day. The curved landing is a beautiful feature in this period property with the taped stair runner shadowing the curve perfectly.

Gray tiled floors create a light relief against the dark walls. Painting the architraves, skirting boards & internal doors the same colour as the walls keeps the lines 'clean' and not 'fussy'. The timber is accentuated against the darker colours and the open risers allows much needed natural light to flood into the space. Phtographer - Jessie May

This lovely Victorian house in Battersea was tired and dated before we opened it up and reconfigured the layout. We added a full width extension with Crittal doors to create an open plan kitchen/diner/play area for the family, and added a handsome deVOL shaker kitchen.

Dart Midnight, timeless & stylish from the Rivers Collection.
This runner is a clever balance of the classic pinstripe and herringbone indictive of Roger Oates and framed by a dark blue border.
It sits here on a curving white staircase.
