Ive loved this house for fourteen years and have often driven by thinking, all that house needs is someone to love it ( and a bucket of money). Well, it's now mine, and for the last three months I have made every decision about colors, finishes, fixtures, designs etc. I'd love some advice on a great exterior paint color(s). The house faces East, and overlooks cornfields.

Oh my goodness, such a sweet pup. All your hard work will be worth it, I'm sure. I'll keep checking back for future updates.

People ask me why I moved out ( 2 miles) of chic little Hudson, and I tell them so Max could have woods and a stream to play in. His BFF, Scampy is pretty happy too. Mice, toads and snakes, Oh My!

It may be Spring until the painting is done and finished. We are now thinking about Sherwin Williams' new paint, Duration, which has a high plastic content and does not require a primer. A friend of mine just did his house in it and it looks Fab. The lead paint has effectively "pickled" the wood so that it is really hard. There were only two pieces to replace on the entire house. We have now put 27 bags of eco insulation under the attic floor boards, and covered the top part of the stair case with insulation boards to keep the heat in for the winter. A new high efficiency furnace (propane fueled) and duct work in the basement, and a continuous dehumidifier has helped enormously . The fuel tanks were moved into the woods, and I started to build a "blind" around them using logs that were in various piles on the property. We held the first tea party on September 21st, and it was a big hit!

Have you considered a red color? Like this one, but not quite so orange.

No, I haven't considered Reds at all they always connote Barns to me and not houses..I'd love a red barn- maybe next year when we start work on the existing one..

Is it a craftsman? If so, I would stick to tradition and go with a nature color, maybe sage with natural trim and a barn red door.

I say no to yellow. I think it's a stress inducing color, and always looks kitschy.
I vote a grey or grey green.

Oh my goodness Martha Stewarts house looks like mine- right down to the ugly Yew bushes in front! My porch is nicer, but not original to the house., it was added in 1930- 110 years after the house was built. I'm over Yellow and thinking now towards a stone grey green - but Im def going with a contrast trim.

I think it's great that you're taking your time and attending to the necessary, energy-efficient items first. The big payoff will happen next spring when the house is transformed by the perfect colors to restore it's long lost grandeur. Worth waiting for!

Thank you! Im def of the "why wait, let's decorate" school, so this has been hard. But the interior pay off is so lovely - and we are hearing horror stories of the coming winter (again) in the North East. I have covered the entire front entry way with a 9'
Floor to ceiling chenille jacquard fabric curtain, backed in micro fleece and lined with cotton batting. Im pretty sure that lovely as the entrance is, it will be a huge heat disperser!

Just wanted to chime in with great admiration for your good eye, dedication, kindness and determination, Amanda! I look forward to seeing the progress on this wonderful old house....and what a lovely thing to do for the elderly people in your community.

I'm guessing you've already had a look at the Farrow & Ball colours? http://us.farrow-ball.com

Alas, looking at F&B paints is all I can do right now! I used their Lime White for all the downstairs trim in The Living and Dining Rooms. Spectacular paint to use and color was perfection. I came across 2 gallons for $15 each at an estate sale..

Amanda - it's worth watching for Farrow & Ball on Craigslist - it's expensive enough that people with left-over or unwanted cans do try to re-sell it.

Christmas is now over, and it's time to start planning for the renovations for the coming year. We blew through a two year budget in three months with ease and alacrity. Outside projects include replicating the front porch on the back of the house, and adding a pergola, kitchen of sorts, raised beds, outside shower, sauna. Inside, we will finish up insulating the attic, complete the roughed in bathroom there and make open loft/crash space for young visitors. On the second level the roughed in en-suite bathroom off the Mistress bedroom will be finished.
Plans for an extension off the back of the house on one level - two or three large bed sitting rooms with en-suite ADA bathrooms will be completed and submitted.

Floor to ceiling curtains, lined with cotton quilt batting and backed with micro fleece were made to hand over the front and back doors, insulating the hallway. The stairs were badly worn, and rather than replace all the treads, I went with a very heave industrial padding and top notch carpet, tightly stapled around the treads for safety.

Like the door curtains: an old fashioned solution that still works well today.

Did you end up painting the outside before winter?

No and everyone is now asking..in the supermarket, passers by, at the firehouse monthly breakfast. The house sits on a corner lot at a county cross road. People have watched it's decline for years and are excited to see what's next!

I made very similar curtains for the very draughty front door in our 1850s farmhouse. ;)

I eventually helped the curtains by running duct tape across every seam between the door and the door-frame, and all over the knob and lock as well. We're in a part of Canada where today's HIGH is 3.2'F, so every little bit helps!

It's nice to have a house admired by others, it's a wonderfully positive sensation, we found.

Not yet..I'm still formulating this years project list which may have put painting behind for a while following my first and obscenely expensive cold winter..at least almost 200 years of lead in paint has hardened the wood sufficiently that it's not endangered. But most of the guttering is off the house which was taken down during the scraping and that's an issue. I ordered and paid for new half round guttering last year so now need to decide whether to cancel for now or what. Never a dull moment...!

Benjamin Moore has a historic collection that would be worth exploring. With your porch trim , I believe this would be a nice option.

I like the outlining of the windows in the same color as the door, and might consider that but want to avoid the Queen Anne Victorian/Painted Lady look. Im using Benjamin Moore so will probably pick a neutral linen white - I really liked the Farrow and Ball lime white that I used for all the trim downstairs inside.

Outlining window optional, I still like the body color of the house. Sounds like a labor of love, so glad you have taken it on. Inside pics would be appreciated for the fun of it.

This year we got a new member of the family. Onslow, a purebred Old English Mastiff puppy. It was clear by the time he was four months that he was going to rapidly outgrow the 12x10' kitchen.

What a classic kitchen update for your historic beauty. Your banquette bench seating is period appropriate . . you may want to consider a slight comfort / style adjustment . . when the budget allows - some black Windsor chairs to replace the individual bench and chair / bench pads in black to bring some of the counter tones over to this side of the room . . the fixture is delightful (black iron, I would surmise) and the puppy . . the best and most important inspiration for the room . . appears to be content! Happy new year and thank you for coming back to share your progress as you work your way through this lovely old girl of a house.

People remark on my use of colour in the house. I suppose its a rebellion against "magnolia"- but it pleases me and the house is happy and cared for for the first time in a while.

I like how you cleverly installed that wall oven. So many kitchens have them installed UNDER the countertops lately. Seems an unhappy trend. Looks great! We have a small kitchen, the people before, managed to squeeze one in. Can't imagine stooping way down to retrieve hot food, uncomfortable and dangerous. Hope you're enjoying the summer ….
