no idea what to do with my front room?!

Lindsey
4 år siden

We have several seating areas in our house and this room is currently being used as one. I just can't get satisfied with the arrangement and it being the first room you see when you enter the house. The first picture is standing inside the front door. I know the rug is too small and the rocking chair doesnt really fit in here.

Looking for suggestions on furniture placement or ideas for front room on a limited budget. ideally, it would be a dining room but we don't need an extra table at this time.

We have two children under 3 years of age. We already have a playroom and office upstairs. Plus our family room/living room.

What about bringing in a bookcase for the largest expanse of wall and creating a quiet little library / reading space?

Sabrina's yellow room has chair 'off the rug' oh my. Sometimes it's ok, and I've noticed it not only for mid-century but in rooms with expensive Persian-type [they love it no matter what the size]...

@Everdebz, I'd bet dollars to donuts that was done for the purposes of the photography so the detail on the fireplace could be seen from that angle. ;-) Agree the chair should be on the rug.

Have you other furniture you can rotate into this room, and show us? :)

A chair about the size of the leather one. For budget, what about coffee table in between them with items with more height / items you'd like to see, and be seen.

Ah, I see... but with a budget, creativity is good. Have a toasty-toned jute, or plain rug you could have a casual 'under layer' for your rug....??

@everdebz funny you say that. My husband and I were just discussing bringing our sectional from upstairs down to the front room. We've had a bit of trouble arranging it in our media/playroom anyway.

Here are some different angles of the room to get an idea.

What does brown floor basically measure? from above looks small. Maybe 2 large chairs it too much. No sectional. I think it's good where you have it. Hefty coffee table imo not balanced/ a good scale with small rug.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>coffee table needs to go. it's from our living room but doesnt currently work in there. i feel like we just have the wrong type of furniture in our house currently.

    Why?

This chair wouldn't bother me with your current brown [leather, traditional, fine] If neutral $280 might be worth the money for you.

Trying to help and see your 'feel' -- front door and rough floor [it is wood?] 32 high for $89.

I personally like your room in your first picture with a few "tweeks". Change position of chairs...white one where the brown one is. Mirror over teal color chest looks good. Where your coffee table is by the stairs....find a padded storage bench for more seating and storage. A large plant in front of the window (to the left side) and that is all you need.

If it fits, I would move your sectional to that room. You can still use the rug in front of it. Use the random chairs in the playroom where they provide seating but it doesn't matter as much that they are mis matched. If the sectional doesn't fit in the front room, I would move the rocker to the playroom and try to find a small sofa or two armchairs for the space. The coffee table also belongs upstairs with the sectional.

I would center the rug to the small console and arrange the leather chair so the front legs are just sitting on it. Then find another chair to replace the glider. You could add a round ottoman between the two chairs to act as a coffee table or place to put your feet up. Add art over the console and replace the torchiere with a more updated floor lamp. Your rug, even though small, has a pretty pattern and the colors work well with the walls, floors, and leather chair. This ottoman would be pretty in there. It's out of stock now but you can get a notification when it comes back in. (Sorry there are no pics-Houzz is being glitchy again.)

This floor lamp would bring a little wood into the room. https://www.target.com/p/oak-wood-tripod-floor-lamp-brass-threshold-153/-/A-53318981?preselect=17299861#lnk=sametab

Can you post a closer pic of the colors in the rug?

love that ottoman. I realized at one point we had our loveseat up there instead of recliner. Here's a picture of what we had. Instead of facing the window, I think putting the loveseat against the long wall would be better placement. what do yall think?

Idk if there's visual room for large loveseat under stairs -- might be best to face the window. A pretty, but neutral console on long wall? with art etc...? W 67" / D 14" / H 36" / the professionals would know better, and quicker than me. So this is to think about,...

The color of floor stain - is there more anywhere in the entire house? Not sure you shouldn't restain it medium: like the entry tile, and to lighten contrast with stair railing.... ??

    This one at least combines a couple stains -- bit rustic, but sort of soft ? W 65" / D 18" / H 36"

If you want your mirror above furniture - consider chalk paint to lighten it/ maybe a blend with what wall color is... sort of:

    Electric fireplace to draw people in? good reviews / 8" / 53" / 24" / $290,

With surfaces already enough in entire area we've seen - a seamist type color could be pretty, and not too pastel to go with brown parts of room.

If you have to, chalk paint glider a medium neutral that looks good - even this wool rug.

The rug is beautiful. If you want to keep it, I would try working the furniture around it so the size works. It may not be perfectly sized, but I think you can make it work. The loveseat looks as though it fits well in the space. I like the idea of putting it on the long wall. Then you could put the blue table underneath the artwork on the short wall opposite it like it is in your picture with the loveseat. Would it be horribly difficult to try the loveseat in that space and see what you think? If it works, I think all you'll need is an ottoman or coffee table, accent chair, and floor lamp and you'll be done!

ok. we are happy with it for now. will be keeping my eye out for a smaller coffee table and art work for behind the sofa! thanks for all the suggestions!

Great! Some artwork over the loveseat would look nice. I would also lower the artwork over the table so that the bottom is about 6" from the top of the table or the center is about 60-63" from the floor. I think that Target ottoman would look great in the space. If you can replace the torchiere lamp with something a little more updated, that would help as well. Sometimes you can find great stuff on Facebook Marketplace, as well as Craigslist or Offerup. At some point, if you wanted to, you could even add a small accent chair by the window. You're almost there!

makes me laugh about replacing the lamp. my husband bought three of those for our house! lol he loves them and they were "only $20!"

I feel you. My husband moved into our new house in Florida six months before me because I was still working up in New York State. Of course he had to have furniture so he went on Craigslist and bought sofas, end tables, and a few other things. I almost fell over when I walked in the house! Needless to say, it all went right back on Craigslist as soon as I moved down! It was a struggle to get him to let those things go!
