Engineered quartz is having a material moment. The product, created from about 90% to 95% ground quartz and 5% to 10% resins and pigments, is a durable, stain- and scratch-resistant material that works wonders as kitchen and bathroom countertops, shower walls, fireplace surrounds and more. In fact, more than half of renovating homeowners who upgrade their kitchen counters are choosing engineered quartz, according to the latest Houzz research. And despite dramatic price increases due to tariffs on imports from China, which is a big exporter of engineered quartz, the material’s popularity as a kitchen counter choice is up 5% compared with 2019. Engineered quartz isn’t just for countertops and backsplashes. Cambria’s quartz product, for example, can be cut as thin as 1 centimeter and be used to clad fireplaces and shower walls, as shown here with its new Colton color. Similar to Clovelly, this color offers a creamy background with rusty, brownish-gray veins that work well with warm wood tones.
Wood islands. Again, wood is showing up everywhere in kitchens. While the latest Houzz research shows that renovating homeowners who are upgrading their island and choosing a contrasting cabinet color will select a gray (26%), blue (19%) or black (11%) island, wood islands are becoming popular. In fact, the choice of a medium-tone wood island by homeowners matches that of black (11%).

11. Butcher block or other wood countertops. If you’re choosing a countertop material for an island that’s different than your perimeter countertops, consider butcher block or a wood slab. Recent Houzz research reveals that among renovating homeowners who want a contrasting island material, 41% choose butcher block or a wood slab, followed by a distant 28% who choose engineered quartz.
Countertops 8. Porcelain. While engineered quartz will continue its rise in popularity as a countertop material (51% of renovating homeowners choose the material, according to the latest Houzz research), some designers are looking for alternatives that deliver a more polished look with the same durability. Designer Tom Johnson of Hyde Park Renovations is excited about porcelain slabs, which he used for the island in the kitchen shown here. “With porcelain you get very vivid patterns while still sharing stain- and heat-resistant qualities that make quartz so popular,” he says.
Quartzite. As granite continues to decline in popularity, according to recent Houzz research, quartzite seems to be rising. The natural stone is harder than granite and displays infinite variation, meaning no two slabs ever look the same. It’s also super heat-resistant and more scratch-resistant than engineered quartz. This kitchen, which was the most popular one uploaded in 2019, features a dramatic Florida quartzite island countertop.
Hands-free faucet. This is a wish-list item I happen to already have installed in our current kitchen, and I plan to reuse it in the new kitchen. The faucet shown here is a Delta Pilar Single Handle Touch faucet, which you can turn on and off by touching anywhere on the faucet. Our faucet is the Kohler Sensate, which you turn on and off with the wave of a hand in front of a sensor embedded in the neck of the faucet. It’s responsive, hasn’t randomly turned off or on, and keeps me from making a big, wet mess on the sink deck.
