Another way to make the best use of deep drawers is to break them up internally into layers. You can either use a built-in drawer divider system or find a layered drop-in unit. A tiered organizer like this can create compartments smaller than an individual drawer to gain maximum space efficiency. Just keep in mind that the upper layer will partially cover the lower layer (or will need to be slid individually), so you should put the most-used items on the most reachable tier.
Consider Going Vertical Want to tidy up your cutlery drawer without having to assign each piece an individual place? Try a drawer with vertical cutlery bins that let you simply drop in pieces with long handles (such as spatulas and slotted spoons) and pull them out easily. You’ll be able to see each piece, and you won’t have to remember exactly where you got it later.
Consider Counter-Depth Upper-Uppers Rather than using typical 12- to 15-inch upper cabinets alone, consider using these at eye level with a row of counter-depth upper cabinets above, as shown here. This makes your higher cabinets flush with a pantry or fridge cabinet for a tidy look and provides a bit more storage space for less-used or larger items, such as wide mixing bowls or seasonal goods.
Float Some Open Shelves Another great alternative to trendy open shelves above your main wall of cabinets is to instead use open shelves above a peninsula. This gives you a great visually obvious spot to place items that a guest might want to grab, but without completely boxing in sight lines, so you still feel like you can see into and out of the kitchen to rooms beyond.
For dramatic contrast to the white oak, the designer added matte black cabinet pulls, a pair of blackened metal pendant lights and a custom vent hood of cold-rolled steel. The backsplash behind the gas cooktop features small dimensional white tiles. “Everything is about textures in this home; the small white tiles add another layer of texture to the space,” Rojas-Sila says.
Utensil storage. Vertical utensil storage is one of my most-requested accessories to help keep counters near the range clear.
Appliance garage. Small appliances can quickly overtake your countertops, so consider installing an appliance garage with outlets in the back wall. Your most used appliances stay plugged in and ready to go with the lift of the door.
Sliding door pantry. Not all storage is for food. Many clients need to store a combination of glassware, dishes and appliances, as in this photo. Here, frosted translucent sliding glass doors allow for easy visual recognition of what is kept behind closed doors.

Undercabinet mounting. If you’re undertaking a renovation or a new home build, you can often achieve a clean, contemporary look, such as the uncluttered backsplash shown here, with a little thoughtful positioning.
