We could also do something like this next to your fridge with little pocket door - - you would eliminate a couple of cabinets & create a little pantry, and microwave could sit inside. It would be a very charming detail in your kitchen, and simplify the corner as a reach-in (not a walk-in) pantry. The sacrifice is no counter landing space directly next to the fridge (but you'll be able to turn and place things on the island of course - likely not a big inconvenience)
this is another option I do fairly frequently with microwaves - again a small, economical microwave - the door lifts up & then retracts back, like a garage door. Still has a look of a standard door in your kitchen when closed, but oriented sideways. Reaching might be uncomfortable for Christina, so I prefer the 2 door option that retracts at sides.
A "euro" or "frame-less" construction style will have no front "frame" on the boxes, and the doors go all the way to the edge of one another with very tight gaps. This offers the most storage access and is a more modern look (it is also the type of cabinet Ikea sells.....) The look can be created by doing "full overlay" with a face-frame construction, also.
