This project was simply furnishing the front room of a small Portland apartment. The apartment is north-facing so we chose a soft yellow for the ceiling to bring in a feeling of warmth and sunlight. The walls are a pale grey, and both colors find their way into the layers of Emily’s abstracted land and sea scape mural.

The dining room of this home was also updated due to the Kitchen and adjoining space remodel. Continuing the wonderful warm walnut into the Dining Room, the panels were specifically selected so the grain did not match to create interest. Hidden "windows" from the Dining Room into the Kitchen allow for ease of pass through serving. The contrast of the silver leafed cork wallcovering behind the wood countertop repeats the cool vs. warm play of tones as seen in the Kitchen. The homeowner has several different types of coffee and espresso machines. The large doors to the right of the dining room cabinet open to reveal a wet bar in which she can either make an eye-opening cup of espresso or a delicious cocktail. A refrigerator drawer and freezer drawer are also fully concealed within the rich walnut cabinetry. New York, New York | For a young novelist, Axis Mundi provided some quick design response on how to recharge her Dining Area. We applied a bold color-field striped wallpaper, selected a carbon-fiber Moooi chandelier by Bertjan Pot, Jasper Morrison felt chairs and an oval Eero Saarinen dining table. The custom wallpaper can be directly ordered from Axis Mundi. Design: John Beckmann

A starburst mirror hung on the wall is a blast from the past. The groovy accent overlooks a party-sized table created from a single slice of a walnut tree. Minneapolis Interior Designer Brandi Hagen used the tabletop’s “living edge” to create this stunning table which retains the tree’s original shape. No table cloth required; the wood’s sleek finish gets better with age.
