Tim Andersen ArchitectWe restored original dining room buffet, box beams and windows. Owners removed a lower ceiling to find original box beams above still in place. Buffet with beveled mirror survived, but not the leaded glass. New art glass panels were made by craftsman James McKeown. Sill of flanking windows was the right height for a plate rail, so there may have once been one. We added continuous rail with wainscot below. Since trim was already painted we used smooth sheets of MDF, and applied wood battens. Arch in bay window and enlarged opening into kitchen are new. Benjamin Moore (BM) colors are "Confederate Red" and "Atrium White." Light fixtures are antiques, and furniture reproductions. David Whelan photo
UserThe dining and kitchen area lend itself to causal dining in style. The lake view is seen through the glass upper cabinets and the bay window, which makes up the walls of the kitchen. Cabinets are custom made of teak and a hidden pantry and dish buffet is the anchor on the opposite side of the dining room. The art work centered between the teak cabinet is a focal point for the dinner guests. Opposite the kitchen, an over scale mixed media art panel adorns the rose colored accent wall. HufftThis contemporary renovation makes no concession towards differentiating the old from the new. Rather than razing the entire residence an effort was made to conserve what elements could be worked with and added space where an expanded program required it. Clad with cedar, the addition contains a master suite on the first floor and two children’s rooms and playroom on the second floor. A small vegetated roof is located adjacent to the stairwell and is visible from the upper landing. Interiors throughout the house, both in new construction and in the existing renovation, were handled with great care to ensure an experience that is cohesive. Partition walls that once differentiated living, dining, and kitchen spaces, were removed and ceiling vaults expressed. A new kitchen island both defines and complements this singular space.
The parti is a modern addition to a suburban midcentury ranch house. Hence, the name “Modern with Ranch.”
