The Pilato family roots start in Ischia, a beautiful island paradise in the Bay of Naples. Long known for its therapeutic waters and thermal baths, the Greeks and Romans frequented the island to enjoy its natural beauty. Prior to arriving in America members of the Pilato family constructed the stonewalls used to hold the roadway en route to Maronti beach. Salvatore Pilato's father, Masto Pasquale Pilato, oversaw the roadway project that involved the erection of support walls laid out in switchback fashion against the mountain reaching 287 meters (950 feet) above sea level in some areas. Because of this project, Maronti became the most famous beach in Ischia.
