Carex: Garden Design by Carolyn Mullet

Carolyn took my hopelessly-neglected garden and was able to visualize and implement a beautiful - and low maintenance - space. It has lovely visual elements and a great mix of color and texture. She was respectful of my budget and time and worth every penny!

I worked with Carolyn Mullet for 12 years at a high-end design/build firm in the DC area. Carolyn's gardens are always meticulously and beautifully drawn. Her designs speak about the surrounding landscape and about the client they're created for. Carolyn is very creative, has excellent attention to detail, knows everything about plants, and has impeccable taste.

With Carolyn's vision and guidance, we were able to transform our porch and front yard into a welcoming, functional space that flows around the side of our home by way of a beautiful dry-stone wall and custom fence. The landscape and hardscape design is more than aesthetic: it also has solved a persistent water problem with subtle drainage and grading solutions. While Carolyn came up with many insightful ideas and solutions, big and small, we always felt like this was very much our yard and project. With space for gardening, play, and chatting with neighbors, it perfectly reflects our goals for the yard.

Carolyn did a superb design for my front garden and new steps and retaining wall and her crew installed the new garden etc with great care and skill under her direction.

We hired Carolyn to redesign our backyard...we had an ugly deck, a crumbling patio and old shrubs that were being taken over. She listened really well to our preferences and interests in a very low maintenance, deer-resistant yard. She was very flexible about providing designs for what we could afford now and how we might want to add to it when we could afford more. She was generous with her time as we looked at designs and changed our minds. Carolyn oversaw the installation of the new deck, boulder wall, steps, trellis, patio and plantings and was available by email to answer any dumb questions we had. The yard is stunning and very easy to care for. All of the plants did really well over the winter and everything flowered beautifully this spring. It has added immensely to the value of our house. It is totally in keeping with the Takoma Park style house we have and has added incredible beauty..It's a natural, yet, gorgeous design. Bonus - Carolyn comes over to check on progress and offer additional suggestions about maintenance and new plantings. She is delight to work with and we are very grateful to her!

I first hired Carolyn Mullet to redesign a large area in my backyard that had already been professionally landscaped. The prior design did not meet my expectations aesthetically and was difficult to maintain. She did a wonderful job, using most of the existing plants and moving the maintenance problems to spots where they can spread without smothering other plants and requiring constant attention. Her design also included a modification to a stone wall to add a space for a fountain or sculpture. I subsequently asked her to "tweak" my front yard, with equally lovely results. She has since provided plans and arranged for labor for additional landscape and hardscape in connection with a terrace and screened porch to be built in my backyard. She has a wonderful sense of design, is responsive to clients, and easy to work with. She is also good at giving practical advice. I recommend her unconditionally!

Carolyn designed a two-level waterfall and a seating area/ deck with pergola in my backyard, along with landscaping. The result is magnificent and I could not be happier! It far surpassed expectations. Everything was beautifully executed with attention to detail and harmony with the environment. Carolyn was on site during the construction and attended to all the details. I would recommend her without reservation.
