Transformative Architecture; for Remodeling & Additions to homes and apartments of every style and age. I practice a collaborative approach to design with my clients; listening carefully, questioning deeply, and striving to solve the most difficult challenges with elegance and grace. I am fascinated with all styles and periods of architecture and am equally comfortable designing in classical and contemporary idioms. My work has been featured in local and national publications and TV programs and has received dozens of awards. I have enjoyed serving on expert panels of organizations ranging from the American Institute of Architects and Harvard University, to various local historic preservation boards. I prefer to be deeply involved in the construction of my designs so I generally visit construction sites regularly and work closely with builders to ensure the complete realization of my architectural vision. I also take advantage of the latest web-based technologies, which allow me to meet "virtually" with clients and contractors located anywhere. More than just a convenience to local clients, it is vital in meeting the unique challenges of overseeing design and construction of second homes, usually located far from a client's primary residence. My designs for vacation homes can be found throughout the Atlantic seaboard and the Caribbean.

I approached Dean for help after I became dissatisfied with the architect I had been working with for over a year failed to meet my expectations. Dean was very responsive. For a modest fee, he gave me a lot of time, listened to me, made excellent suggestions and modified the designs of my original architect to meet and even surpass my expectations. Working with him was a pleasure and very satisfying.

Dean helped us renovate a family room and screen porch addition. He was very professional, helpful, organized and had great ideas, plus had resources for the newest building materials. We enjoyed our relationship with him so much that we asked him to design a garage/guest house and a porch/patio for our vacation home. We haven't built them yet, but the finished plans are fantastic. He has also done commercial work that transformed and older property into a stylish and more valuable asset. We highly recommend Dean for renovation or new construction on either residential or commercial property.

Dean was recommended to us when we wanted to renovate and expand our house in Chevy Chase MD. Throughout the planning phase he listened carefully to our ideas and came up with creative solutions to make an old house more functional. Before we began construction we relocated, and so were unable to put his plans into action. By then we thought of him as a friend, and invited him to spend a weekend with us at our vacation house on the Eastern Shore. Even while relaxing, he had a pencil in hand and ideas about what changes could improve the house. When a burst pipe caused major damage we decided to go ahead and put Dean's musings into action. Throughout the project he worked well with us and our builder, and we have thoroughly enjoyed the results.

Dean Brenneman, provided our non profit organization with remodeling plans, which we are in the midst of receiving bids for. We have owned our building almost 16 years and in all of that time we had never been able to agree and move forward with a remodeling plan for our building. Dean came to a few of our meetings and really listened to what each person wanted, he took notes and amazed all of us when he returned with a plan that everyone loved. Working together with his wife Marika, Dean helped us breakthrough some real road blocks that we had com up against for years He was able to listen to the all of the various ideas different people had and bring those ideas together into one design that everyone felt so happy with. Plus he was a great communicator who has gone above and beyond to provide us with extremely professional advice as we have begun to make decisions regarding building materials, color etc.

Dean has guided me through two major home renovations. The first, larger home was a high-end, two story addition which totally changed the way we used the home and redefined the spaces. The added value was clear when we sold the house ten years later. Downsizing led to a smaller, much older home and another extensive renovation. As before, Dean respected the character and original footprint of the house while updating and improving the space. Budget was a much more critical consideration of the second project and Dean worked with me to keep me honest. Each house ended up with a wonderful kitchen, especially so in the second project.

Dean is a consummate professional with wonderful design ideas! I was not exactly sure what I wanted my contractor to do and with Dean's suggestions, the project was so much easier and much less expensive. I wanted to remove a wall between my kitchen and living areas and my contractor's ideas would have involved having to try to find matching tile and wood flooring. With Dean's innovative ideas I didn't have to replace any existing flooring and the project was completed in a lot less time with a lot less stress and expense. While this was not a major renovation, with Dean's ideas, knowledge and experience, the final product is just amazing and I am very happy with my "new" home.

I worked with Dean Brenneman on two home renovation projects one in which we successfully joined two adjacent homes together and the second involving extensive renovation of a first floor and basement of a single family home. In the first project, Dean took the two original homes which were very dissimilar and developed a design approach which resulted in a very pleasing overall appearance for the new home. The house included an expansive new kitchen/breakfast room on the ground floor and a new master bedroom suite on the second floor, both bridging the space between the two original houses. The final arrangement allowed for easy flow to all parts of the home on both levels. The second project involved renovation of a kitchen, conversion of the entire basement into a music recording studio and installation of French doors to provide access to a screen porch. The experience with Dean on both projects from the initial design meetings through the bidding process to the completed product was excellent, particularly in regard to the way Dean listened carefully to our wishes both in terms of design and cost, while at the same time making suggestions and recommendations of how best to accommodate those wishes. We were completely satisfied with the end results. I would have no hesitation in recommending Dean Brenneman.

Dean designed and oversaw construction of a large addition. We interviewed several architects. He was attentive in listening to our vision and presented several design alternatives that showed amazing creativity and sensitivity to budget. Throughout the process he kept us apprised of progress and was humorous in dealing with unexpected issues that arose during construction. The process was truly collaborative, but Dean would be frank in letting you know where he thought mistakes were being made in choices along the way. I would not hesitate to use him again. In fact, I have.
