Daniel Hunter, AIA Susan Hunter Interiors Modern Architecture, Interiors, Lighting Design and Landscape Design. Mid Century modern experts. Daniel Hunter, AIA has been a Practicing Architect working nationally and internationally. His focus now is on Modern Residential Architecture New Homes, Renovation and Additions. Daniel is a Registered Architect in California and Massachusetts. Hunter Architecture Ltd. has an active practice in Marin County California and with residential projects ongoing in Belvedere &Tiburon, Santa Venetia, Sonoma CA The practice has two distinct thrust: the renovation of architecturally significant homes & designing new Modern homes that are at the forefront of carbon neutral design. Of particular interest is "Floating Dreams" the Modern Floating Home in Sausalito that will soon be Featured in DWELL Magazine. Also of note is Moongate across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.Moongate was originally built in 1907 for the daughter of Valentine Rey, one of the original developers of Belvedere. Daniel undertook a complete restoration, expansion and upgrade of the home and gardens. The project was completed in 2003. The home has been recognized by the Belvedere/ Tiburon Landmarks society for its architectural and historic significance. Community Service: Daniel served on the Belvedere Planning Commission for 6 years (December 1998-November 2004). During his 3 years as Chairman, he helped guide numerous architects and owners through the complicated discretionary Design Review process. Daniel has been retained by the City of Belvedere as a Consulting Architect reviewing and critiquing designs prior to submittal to the Planning Commission. He has also participated as an Architectural Consultant on the City of Belvedere committee to oversee the historic renovation of the Belvedere City Hall designed by noted Bay Area Architect, Albert Farr. He has also served on the committee to mitigate construction impact, served as an organizer in support of the Upper Beach Road under grounding project, and provided pro bono design services for t Parks and Recreation department projects in Community Park. Serving CA Communities such as Ross, Corte Madera, Larkspur, San Rafael, Napa, Sonoma, St. Helena, Healdsburg .

In regards to the Floating Dreams 5A floating home project, we find Dan Hunter's overall grasp of the project including close coordination with structural details was invaluable. The project required very tight dimensional tolerances. Dan's vast experience dealing with County Planning was instrumental in navigating through County agencies and obtaining approval for the project.

Especially at the conceptual stage of the project design we had very robust conversations and traded design options and ideas that were exciting and original. Dan is very concerned about the details and resolution of the design at all levels and this attention to detail and uncompromising decision making translates into very good living environments, quality of light and air and exciting architectural volumes.

Dan Hunter is an immensely talented architect. Working with him on the remodel of our Belvedere home was a joy. Dan designed a home for us that exceeded our expectations. He gave us exactly what we wanted and more. We absolutely love it. The project involved a zillion architectural decisions and details but one thing that stands out in my mind is Dan's unerring eye for color. The colors he chose for our house are perfect. It seems hardly a week goes by that I don't receive a compliment from a friend, neighbor or passer by. The colors blend harmoniously with the surrounding garden as well as the slate roof. In addition to his architectural talents Dan was masterful at keeping the project on schedule from beginning to end. His extensive experience, superb diplomacy skills and thorough knowledge of the codes, rules and regulations allowed him to steer us through design review with the greatest of ease. We did not experience a single problem or delay. How often do you hear THAT? All went well and the remodel of our 5000 square foot residence was completed on budget and ahead of schedule. Dan kept his wonderful sense of humor throughout and didn't even mind that our dog Martha left muddy paw prints on his lovely trousers every single morning. I recommend Dan Hunter with total confidence. Dan has very creative ideas but works in a true partnership (i.e., he listens!). He is sound in his fundamentals and very knowledgeable of materials, practices, standards and regulations in the area. He has an excellent working knowledge of the Planning Commission process and good personal relationships with the commissioners and staff. Dan provided a clear and detailed budget at the outset and has kept to it. He is very respponsive by e-mail and telephone and willing to do the legwork required to keep the project moving. On top of it all, he is a pleasure to work with.

I have worked with a number of architects over the course of twenty five years and in my experience Dan Hunter stands head and shoulders above them. Dan is a consummate professional. He is remarkably imaginative, with a breadth and depth of knowledge that I have found unequaled. Dan’s deft hand and mind is surpassed only by his ability to navigate the always challenging and often difficult build process. Dan is able to take a design and mesh with a builder and the regulatory process in a way that breaths life into that design, sustaining and enhancing its soul and essence. Perhaps the aspect I most admire about Dan is his ability to understand and appreciate an existing design (in our most recent work, my mid century modern Cliff May house) without allowing himself or the client to become a slave to the original design. He respects the work of the original architect and works with it in a way that doesn’t just compliment, but rather…surprisingly and delightfully renders the whole so much greater than its parts. Please don’t misunderstand me however. His efforts are not mystical or ethereal; rather they are tactile, thoughtful, perceptive and intelligent. I have rarely worked with anyone that approaches Dan’s ability, integrity or grace. Dan is a consummate and competent professional, architect and gentleman.

We have been working with Dan for many years now and are extremely happy with everything. We interviewed 5 different architects for our project and he was the clear choice as soon as we met him and saw his work. He really took the time to listen to us to understand what kind of house we wanted, and more importantly "needed". He "got it" right away and his first draft was excellent. We never felt like he was imposing styles and ideas we did not want, he always came up with ideal and elegant solutions perfect for us. Our project was very challenging because we wanted to use parts of our existing house to make an entirely new home on a challenging sloped lot. This created a very constrained and limiting situation for an architect but Dan was able to work with what we had to make a great new design. Our contractor has been very impressed with the efficiency and intelligence in his plans; it is going to save us a lot of money in construction costs. Another thing that is really good about Dan, especially if you live in southern Marin County, is that he is a gifted diplomat. He has done a really good job of working with the Planning department in Sausalito, and working with our neighbors to get the design that we want. We can't recommend Daniel Hunter Architecture AIA enough. We referred our close friends who live in Mill Valley to him and they were very happy with the results.
