With offices overlooking Southport Harbor and also in downtown Fairfield, J.P. Franzen Associates is an award-winning architecture firm led by John P. Franzen, FAIA, a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. A frequent juror on design juries and a former Historic District Commissioner, Franzen, with a staff of ten, specializes in preservation, planning, new construction, and additions and renovations. Franzen received a B.Arch and M.Arch from Cornell University where he also taught Design. He served on the national Board of Directors of the American Institute of Architects and was President of the Connecticut AIA Chapter. He has been involved in many regional and community boards and committees including the Bicycle Commission for the Town of Fairfield. The staff includes three registered architects, a landscape architect, designers, and a LEED Certified Professional. Expertise is offered in the areas of Residential, Commercial and Institutional design. Projects have been widely published in The New York Times, Elle Décor, Town & Country, Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Connecticut Magazine, Connecticut Cottages & Gardens, Palm Beach Cottages & Gardens, Westport Magazine, Greenwich Magazine, atHome, Lillian August Magazine, Serendipity, The National Trust for Historic Preservation Bulletin and other publications. We picked J.P. Franzen to help us transform a builder’s colonial into a modern home with traditional flourishes and classic elements. Whether it was a fireplace update in the family room, a stone terrace in the back yard, or Master Bath and Powder Room renovations, we were always treated as if our projects were the highest priority. Recently, a built-in bookcase design transformed a neglected living room into a cozy reading room. After many small projects that came in on time and on budget, we retained J.P. Franzen Architects to design a lake house. We wanted to tear down an 850 square foot summer cabin and build a house that would serve as a weekend getaway or seasonal retreat. The resulting 1,800 square foot house is the perfect small house. It is open, efficient and beautiful and takes full advantage of the lake views. Neighbors and friends have remarked that it fits well into the surrounding community and looks as if it has always been there. That’s the ultimate compliment to J.P. Franzen’s design aesthetics. We offer the highest recommendation for their services and look forward to our next project with J.P. Franzen Architects.

I've worked with Jack Franzen on several projects, and his listening skills are second to none. With Design Associate Katrina, they designed the kitchen of my dreams, exactly the way I wanted it . . . and then some. The attention to detail in the design process resulted in a magnificent and functional layout. They are design geniuses!

JP Franzen and Associates is an incredibly skilled, talented, and creative team. Our home was devastated by a major fire and we chose Jack and his team to design a home we could imagine returning to. They surpassed our expectations 10 fold, as they meticulously considered the original foundation and incorporated our "wish list" resulting in a beautiful, elegant home. Their team was able to improve upon the prior existing details we loved (wooden ceiling beams, large kitchen island, etc.) while incorporating a more functional, pleasing open floor plan and maintaing charm and visual appeal in every room. Moving an oddly placed staircase to the front foyer; raising the floor height to eliminate an outdated sunken family room; adding a guest room to connect the upper level; flip flopping a cabana bathroom with the laundry room created a fully functional space; moving the fireplace and creating a wall of windows to incorporate the beautiful landscaping were just a few of their ingenious ideas. Intelligent, personable, accessible, and caring are just a few words to describe this firm.

My experience with working with Jack Franzen is outstanding. We created a sophisticated version of a tired 1900's farm house into a home for my family that we still enjoy 27 years later. Jack!s keen understanding of the history of old houses and preservation of style in today's living with technology changing he keeps an eye on the past with firm hand on the future. He urged me to use gas instead of oil and said it might be a wise but initially expensive change, and he was correct. As my family grew we put in a pool house that has been a place for many summer memories. It is a casual blend of a Nantucket porch and a California patio for outside entertaining. So when I pull in my driveway I am always glad to be safe and secure in the house that Jack designed. Our most recent addition is a generator, who knew that would be an issue and I was happy I had gas. Our home has stood the test of time and as the summer approaches and the awning is unfurled over the terrace and the new fire pit is put to use. I will think of the day when I said to Jack, "I envision this house to reflect the image of lilacs in a pewter pot." He knew exactly what I was talking about in an old school charm and his drawings began.
