Free Space Intent

We always felt that going through a renovation was a nightmare. We browsed through many ID firms, read through all the comments and came across “Free Space Intent”. We were attracted & impressed by their creativity. They just looked different. Our first visit started with a warm welcome by Raymond. After a 2 hrs chat, we made up our mind on the spot . We were won over by Raymond’s sincerity, creativity and ideas. He was prepared and sounded the right person for the "job". No fancy promises nor guarantees to quick turn arounds. He lets his designs do the talking. Some people may mistook him as boastful but trust us, he sets the bar high and delivers. The design phase was new to us but we were highly impressed with the uniqueness and boldness. We were hesitant at times but Raymond was always there to walk us through his thoughts and ideas. We bounced ideas around with him and he was always receptive to alternatives. The whole Renovation was like a roller coster due to the covid situation. However, Raymond has proven his capability in managing the whole process against all odds. He made things happen and ensured the renovation was kept on track and of a high standard. And of cos we have Brandon who is the Captain on the ground. A guy who is as cool as a cucumber, quiet but strong, always there to keep things on track. From the beginning to the handover, Raymond & Brandon jumped through hoops to keep things moving under this extremely difficult covid period. They were very responsive and responsible in providing updates. Their attention to detail was phenomenal. They made the entire renovation an amazing experience. At times when we couldnt agree on a particular design or color scheme or furniture, Raymond is always the "go to" person. His expertise and experience gave us the assurance that we had put our faith in the right ID. Once again, Heartfelt thanks to Raymond for designing and creating a unique magical home for us. Mine was a very extensive renovation journey involving literally gutting and re-building the insides of my 35+ year old apartment, spanning more than 1.5 years including the Circuit Breaker hiatus. It has truly been a roller-coaster ride – fun but adrenaline-pumping with its fair share of ups & downs, twists & turns as well as thrills & spills. However, I could not be more fortunate than to have IDs Raymond Seow & Carlos Sim + PM Perlinda Too from FSI as my Companions on this ride. The 3 of them made up my ‘Dream Team’ who would bend over backwards in order to fulfil the many wishes I had for my renovations. They were never fazed when my plans/decisions changed mid-way through the renovation works but always tried their best to accommodate my requirements and were also game to try out some of my ‘radical’ ideas as well as do things they had never done before. While things did not work out as planned/intended all the time and issues did crop up along the way, the FSI Dream Team never failed to swing into action. They were more than willing to re-work the construction in order to right any wrongs or solve problems. A test of great service is not how an ID responds to issues/problems during the renovation but their response after handover and when all payments have already been made. FSI is truly the Gold Standard as they are still going the last mile and extra mile in settling move-in teething issues for my project as well as entertaining my add-on requests. What makes FSI really stand out in this crowded industry for me were also their frank, sensible & practical advice/approach; while other IDs expected a 10% down payment upfront based on their quotation (which can come up to tens of thousands for a big project), FSI’s approach is to charge a design fee first & then come up with more accurate costing once the design is more or less done. Their take is that if their costing is not acceptable to you eventually, you are welcomed to take their designs/drawings and engage your own contractor to implement them. This gives you an opportunity to assess how well you can work with the ID and a ‘Get-Out-of-Jail-Free’ card (since you are not locked in by the hefty 10% down payment) if things don’t work out between you and the ID ultimately. Their integrit is also without question; an ex-ID friend once told me that Variation Orders are like ‘blood’ to an ID as it brings out the ‘Shark’ in them – that is where they would take advantage of your (by then) helpless situation and extract as much financial compensation as possible for the changes. If such is common in the industry, I must be lucky as I’ve had countless VOs during the construction phase but never encountered any shark at FSI. On the contrary, I even had the benefit of some charges waived for my change requests. It was clearly a labour of love, blood, sweat & tears by the FSI Dream Team to transform & customise my apartment into what I wanted and for that, I’m truly grateful.

We first saw one of FSI's project in a Square Room magazine and it was pleasant and similar to what we like. After initial discussions, we decided to go with FSI for our renovation and started collaborating with Raymond and Jovie on our home. We wanted a modern Scandinavian theme that was simple and elegant. Suffice to say, FSI delivered and we are happy with the renovation process and results. Here are the some of the areas that we would like to especially commend them on: 1) Design process and 3-D drawings We had several rounds of meetings where Raymond took us through his design proposals. He was attentive to our requirements and provided good suggestions and advice to us, striking a balance on aesthetics and practicality, which was valuable. The 3-D drawings FSI provided were realistic and better helped us in visualizing the various styles, colours and ideas. They were willing to continually update the drawings based on our feedback. Impressively, our home turned out to be very close to the 3-D renderings. 2) Onsite supervision and coordination Jovie did a fantastic job onsite working with their various contractors, and even coordinating with some external vendors that we engaged. She was thorough and detailed, and kept us updated on the renovation progress daily. She was also quick to respond to our concerns and would do her best to resolve any issues we encountered. Her attitude, dedication and attention to detail really stood out. 3) Keeping to the schedule As we were renting a place, we had a tight timeline to meet and communicated it early. FSI was able to plan and come up with a schedule and kept to it, and delivered the project on time. Even after the project was handed over, they continued to follow-up with us. We first heard about FSI through our friends. Having seen the workmanship and witnessed the close follow up throughout their renovation, it convinced us to confidently engage FSI for our new home. We spent quite a considerable amount of time to finalise the design but Raymond was ever patient and always enthusiastic during our meetings. Raymond and Perlinda didn’t disappoint us during the reno period and we could always count on them to sort out the schedules and works between the various parties. We had a great and amicable time partnering with them to complete the look of our new home. We love it and are enjoying our new home every day. Leon from FSI was the designer for our home. We chose Leon because he offered us a design which no other designer we met suggested. We liked the concept he proposed to us. Leon and his colleague Tiffany were willing to listen to our preference and suggestions. There were corrections to workmanship but they were completed quite promptly. The project was completed quite timely and we were able to move in before he lunar seventh month.

These guys went beyond their call of duty to accommodate my various unusual requests and ideas and to turn them into reality. I would use them again for their creativity, flexibility and very pleasant working relationship. They delivered to the planned timeframes and costs.

Thank you Yong Ping and FSI for giving us our dream home! We've moved in to our BTO for 2 weeks and couldn't be happier with everything.. the after sales care and service is excellent as well, from touching up of the wall paint, to replacing our scratched vinyl tiles from the movers, correcting a slight defect in our master bathroom door, all the way to getting someone to clear the debris under the kitchen sink for us. The entire engagement has been a breeze from the design stage and renovation through to handover and we're very happy to have you as our ID. You have been professional, meticulous, very detailed, patient, accommodating and have always delivered when you said you will. You show up on time for meetings, are responsive and responsible too, and will always respect our decisions and preferences without imposing anything on us. Being first time homeowners, we were naturally stressed out initially with all the options and choices in the market.. So many IDs and so many design firms... who should we choose? However I can say we are definitely very glad to have chosen FSI and to have had Yong Ping as our designer. We were impressed from our first meeting as we were briefed on the entire process from engagement to handover and it gave us a very good idea of the timeline and processes so we can be mentally prepared. Best of all, FSI was able to work with and accommodate our budget without compromising on quality or their delivery. I remember many late night phone calls, exchanges and even meetings (due to our busy work schedule, we usually only can spend time discussing home reno details at night) where Yong Ping will be patiently listening to our requests, comments, complaints, ideas, etc. while giving her input too. It helped that she is passionate and enthusiastic and was always positive in her attitude. Yong Ping even personally spent hours with us one Saturday afternoon, painstakingly sticking on little squares for a customized tetris decal design on our bedroom wardrobe doors. This took up an entire afternoon (easily 5 to 6 hours) and was a very tedious and manual activity. Which ID will do this with you out of their own time? We were very touched by the effort and by her going the extra mile for us. We appreciate the little touches, attention to detail and excellent customer service provided by Yong Ping and her team and it truly made the entire renovation process a smooth sailing one. We were comfortable and felt very safe to leave our home in her hands. Raymond was vital in helping us to put together a place we're still proud of coming home to every single day When we were discussing our renovation plans, Raymond's extensive portfolio gave us many ideas and points of reference for our scandi industrial theme. What we're most grateful for is the fuss-free experience we had during the renovation. As we didn't have the time to supervise the project, we left it completely to Raymond and his team. There was clear coordination between his team members and the entire workflow was smooth and timely. While we were shopping for furniture and knick knacks, Raymond was just a what's app message away. He gave us his professional input on the items, which gave us peace of mind that these pieces we were keen to buy would have aesthetic resonance with the rest of the house. We're thus very grateful to him for his time and willingness to go above and beyond his scope to help us. When we saw the final product, we were floored. Our house looked exactly like the 3D rendition - there was no exaggeration or over-selling in the latter. It was also obvious to the sight and touch that the materials that FSI uses are of a very high quality. They went to great lengths to source for materials that fit the design that were within our budget and provided good inputs based on their experience. Good execution of project management and after sales service was flawless.

Overall, it was a very fun experience. Raymond and Jovie helped us to create a design-centric and cosy home which is totally what we wanted. As our house is very small, they gave many good ideas on how to maximise the space and to "open" up the area so it do not look cramped. Raymond is very experienced and we have absolute trust in him. Jovie is very helpful and often goes beyond her duties to help us. The working relationship through the few months have always been good and they worked accordingly to the timeline which was mutually agreed. Our renovation with Free Space Intent was a smooth, fun and pleasant experience. It was by fate that we had cross path with Leon (Project Manager) and Jovie (Designer) and thereafter the first meeting, we decided to engaged them. Leon is someone whom is not afraid to enunciate his thoughts/ideas and it was this honesty and being upfront as to what to expect, that was a winning factor for us. Jovie, my ever sweet and hardworking designer, whom relentlessly assisted and constantly updated us during the renovation progress. We have to applause both of them for helping us to achieve our dream place, a home we return to daily and falling in love once all over again. Being first time homeowners, we did not know what to expect of and as both my husband and I are constantly travelling we didn't had much time to recce on what kind of theme or layout that we like/needed and needless to mention to monitor the renovation. This duo dynamic could piece up on every information during our meetings and worked their magic! I was totally floored when they came out with my first drawing! They were able to execute the whole renovation process without us getting much involved and the end results was not only a lovely home but a functional one as well! Not forgetting they are our "walking encyclopedia designers"! It was overwhelming while shopping for furniture's and what's not for our new home and we couldn't decide on what to purchase. Adding on to our misery was that both of us were constantly not in town and were busy at work. Thankfully for the duo else I would think we would have only a bed seating at home till now! Having them accompanying us for furniture shopping was a breeze and constantly giving me their votes on items which I send them (even after my renovation have been completed), I am so grateful! In every project, there's bound to be some hiccups but ours was swiftly manage by the duo and once again proving their efficiency! Now that we have moved in and needing some assistance for them, never once was there a whiff of negativity and they will gladly offer their advises or render assistance should there be a need. If there was anything we could do it all over again - NOTHING! Trusting this duo dynamic on their choices was the best decision made! We are glad that we got Leon and Jovie and can't thanks them enough for all the hard work rendered! Million thanks!
