Lori Backen Interiors exemplifies the feeling of the California lifestyle. Her interiors are warm and inviting, comfortable yet sophisticated, casual with a touch of playfulness. Over the past 20 years she has created gorgeous environments for clients throughout California, Colorado, Georgia, Montana, Utah, Washington and New York. Lori has worked on several high-profile interior design projects including the Sundance Institute and Robert Redford’s private residence in Utah, the guest suites at George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch, the Aspen Institute and the Crown Family Private Residence in Aspen. Her work ranges from luxurious mountain homes, rustic fly-fishing lodges, highly acclaimed restaurants and hotels as well as high-end residences in Bel-Air, the Napa Valley, Silicon Valley, Reynolds - Lake Oconee, Aspen, Santa Monica, Malibu and the Hamptons. The restaurant French Blue that she designed and owned with her former husband, architect Howard Backen, in St. Helena was listed in Architectural Digest as “One of the 10 Most Beautifully Designed Restaurants of 2012”. Lori has been published in “From the Land” by Daniel P. Gregory and Howard Backen for Rizzoli, “Weekend Houses” by Penelope Rowlands for Chronicle Books, "California Cottages" and "California Wine Country" by Diane Dorrans Saeks for Chronical Books, and the "Pottery Barn Design Library" series published by Oxmoor House. Her work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, California Homes, C Magazine, Forbes, House Beautiful and Metropolitan Home.

Lori is my go to for all things design. Her aesthetic, expertise and sensibility is second to none. She can masterfully guide any aspect of the design process, including a ground-up build. She makes what can at times feel overwhelming, seem very manageable. And, her sunny personality makes even the challenging decisions fun!

I have worked on many projects with Lori Backen for over 30 years by providing custom fabricated soft furnishings (curtains, shades, pillows, cushions, etc.). Project locations include the San Francisco Bay Area, Sundance, Los Angeles, Napa Valley and many more. She assembles a great team and works closely with the team and the client. Lori is very easy to work with and has an amazing sense of style. Lisa Mathes

Lori is an amazingly talented and creative designer. My husband and I were very familiar with many of her projects and had not had the opportunity to work with her until now. We recently partnered with Lori to help with all aspects of our home's interior design which we are currently building. Lori did not hesitate to travel cross country to meet with us, the builder, and the vendors (flooring, electrical fixtures, plumbing fixtures and cabinetry). All involved were extremely impressed with her expertise, attention to detail and professionalism. Bottom line, her help up to this point has been invaluable and has made the decision-making process enjoyable and stress free. We look forward to Lori taking our vision and making it a reality.

Notably, we worked together on the restaurant French Blue which was listed by Architectural Digest as one of the most beautifully designed new restaurants in 2012.
