Blue Heron Landscape Design is a design, build firm. Drawing inspiration from nature and from each site's surroundings, we create gardens that accentuate architecture and create sense of place, providing our clients with elegant and functional outdoor spaces. Our projects are primarily residential, and range from small gardens to complete site renovations throughout Connecticut. Scott Hokunson, principal and owner of Blue Heron Landscape Design, has been creating landscapes and gardens since 1981 and brings a wealth of experience and expertise to each project. A proponent of natural and sustainable principles, he works closely with his clients to create elegant and functional outdoor living spaces. As a garden writer, whose work has been featured in Fine Gardening Magazine, Connecticut Gardener Magazine, and APLD's The Designer, Scott also writes the company blog Garden Sketches. He is a founding member of the international garden design blog Garden Designers Roundtable, and lectures to garden clubs and other interested organizations on topics such as garden design, plants, and gardening. Scott has also served an adviser to a Sustainable Landscape Design class at Wesleyan University, co-host, designer, and co-producer of the TV show The Ultimate Backyard Makeover on WTIC Fox 61, and is a past board member of the Connecticut Chapter of The Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLDCT).

Scott is a genius. He transformed my backyard with beautiful plants and an incredible arbor. It’s pure magic. He has incredible vision and is very knowledgeable about native plants. I highly recommend blue heron.

Scott did an amazing remake of our landscaping and we couldn't be more pleased. Everything including stone walls, sidewalks, patio, plantings, lighting , correction of drainage problems and even an area for our dog was executed with the eye of an artist and is of amazing quality. Scott is professional, knowledgeable, met all deadlines and we now enjoy our property.

We've used Scott and Blue Heron Landscape Design for many projects over the years, including a complete redesign of all our landscaping, shrubs and flowers, as well as a few smaller projects and plantings here and there. Scott is a terrific designer and has an in-depth knowledge of the plants, shrubs and trees native to our area. He sweats the details and stands behind his work. Highly recommended.

Scott, Blue Heron's owner, is a great listener and designs a landscape for his client's use and enjoyment. He sticks to the agreed-upon budget, is creative and knowledgeable. Our once-scruffy wooded acre is now enhanced with walkways, a stone path, and a range of bloom and color. I requested hydrangeas; now we have 4 varieties. Sitting on the deck in summer is a little bit of Heaven. Our relationship is ongoing; Blue Heron periodically adds to the plantings, and does our spring & fall clean-ups each year.

I have worked with Scott at Blue Heron Landscape Design twice and both times he's done excellent work. He has a great eye for design and working with the existing landscape. He's timely and has a great team who are thorough in their clean-up. I would use him again in heartbeat. He has created new garden beds and worked to fix my poor gardening decisions in existing beds.

Scott from Blue Heron Landscaping was a pleasure to work with. He took our vision and created a beautiful oasis for us. We are very happy with all the hardscape and landscape design he created in our backyard.. He has a great eye for detail. He incorporated a pergola, fireplace and BBQ peninsula in the design. We are originally from California so we wanted a California feel and he delivered on that. He is also very knowledgeable about many varieties of trees and plants that thrive in our CT. climate. I would recommend Scott for any outdoor design project that you may have.

Scott and Blue Heron Landscape Design are wonderful. Created a beautiful bird/butterfly garden and walkway that totally transformed our back deck area. They are courteous, professional, and go above and beyond. Would most definitely use them again and again when I need landscaping help!
