Saratoga Springs' Prestigious Custom Architectural Design Firm

SD Atelier (French for studio) Architecture L.L.C. is a local architectural firm based out of Saratoga Springs. The firm was first established in 1992 as a sole proprietorship by Susan Davis. Donald Davis joined in 1996 and the business was established as a L.L.C. The partners, Donald and Susan Davis have diverse architectural and planning background from working in New York, Connecticut, Switzerland and Germany. Our background in combination with our size allows the firm to work with various styles and adapt the design for the site. We pride ourselves on meeting the personal needs of the client in a collaborative work environment. SD Atelier believes that open communication, realistic budgets and deadlines are the key to successful projects.

My project was probably a bit unusual; I needed to design & build a reproduction of an 1830's Greek Revival farmhouse. having seen 'builder designed" houses, it was clear they had nowhere near the historic understanding nor design training to do the job authentically. Sue & Don understood instantly what design features were appropriate, and how to make them fit my needs and budget. they stayed the course through comprehensive discussions of many details; and researched the historic record to get particular features right. I'm very pleased with the results!

Sue and Don have a great understanding of, and ability to apply, the aesthetic details Clients seek in their new houses and renovations. They listen to the specific needs for the project, apply their decades' experience and knowledge to provide an appropriate layout, adding the architectural elements that make the project a well-rounded success. Through thorough design, Sue and Don make it easy for the Builder to understand the Client's desires and perform the required tasks. Projects are able to be completed on-time as the majority of the details have been committed to prior to the start of construction and when questions do come up, Sue and Don are right there, developing a solution. I recommend SD Atelier Architecture knowing the high level of commitment, experience, and dedication Sue and Don provide each Client.

Sue and Don Davis did an excellent job designing our new home on Lake George. We presented them with a rudimentary plan that was functional but not beautiful. They rationalized the design and added many attractive features, while maintaining an aesthetic appropriate to this Adirondack community. They listened well to our description of our lifestyle and preferences and were wiling to accommodate changes good-naturedly. Don worked especially hard on some engineering issues that arose and was ready to consider other approaches. They both worked well with our contractor and designer, keeping communications open through the entire project. They also administered the construction process, as we were out of town, and kept us advised of any issues as they arose. They were a pleasure to work with and I would certainly recommend them.

We hired SD Atelier to design a complete renovation to our one story cape. Our project was somewhat complicated due to our small, odd-shaped lot which is located in an older residential neighborhood. We knew it could be a disaster if we didn't hire a professional and experienced architectural firm. After seeing many SD Atelier-designed homes and commercial buildings, we knew that their style and design were the perfect match for our expectations. To ensure our project was a success, we continued with SD Atelier during the construction phase. This was a smart decision as there were several times when their knowledge was necessary. We absolutely love our house and appreciate the interesting design details that you can only have by hiring a talented architect. It was a pleasure working with Sue and Don and we highly recommend them.

We worked closely with Sue and Don Davis on two major projects for our home. The first project was the replacement of 35 windows in our main house. Sue guided us to several manufacturers, helped us decide on the best solution and referred us to the right person to install these windows. We are very happy with the windows and the installation. The second project was the complete remodel of a small apartment. Sue and Don made excellent recommendations to use the space efficiently. They worked closely with the contractor to ensure a successful project. We are very pleased with the results; the apartment has never been vacant!

We hired Sue and Don to design our “age-in-place” home on a unique piece of hilly rural property. Sue listened carefully to what we wanted and nailed the concept in her first sketch. Our list of desired features was fairly unusual (elevator, dog shower and kennel area, two offices that were connected) and Sue was able to incorporate all those elements into a stunningly beautiful design. Don was committed to appropriately balancing energy efficiency with cost in designing the insulation and heating/cooling systems. The process has been enjoyable and soon we will be living in our perfect custom home.

The team at SD Atelier Architecture made the building process seamless for our family. Their exquisite design for our totally renovated deck and screened-in porch was perfect. It's been several years now and we have had no issues, just pleasure from the wonderful addition to our living space. I'd recommend Don and Susan Davis to anyone whether it be a small job like ours, or a new build. Simply fabulous!

Don and Sue planned a major renovation of my 100+ year old farm house. I am extremely pleased with the results: though modern, solid, and tight, the new parts of the house integrate well with the remaining old structure. Don and Sue were very thorough and also vey flexible in their planning. They worked with me on everything from overall design to the minutest details of the materials we used. They are very accommodating to and gentle with amateur enthusiasms and ideas. Best of all, they were also flexible with payment; I especially appreciated the breaks they gave me when the project began to strain my budget. Overall, they are very good at what they do and very easy to work with.

My wife and I hired SD Atelier to renovate a 150 + year old home. We were extremely happy with Don and Sue's work throughout the process. Starting with turning our vision into a working design, to getting approvals from the notoriously difficult historic review board and the building department, to budgeting and selecting a contractor, and finally seeing the construction through and making adjustments they could not have been better. We are extremely nappy with the end result and could not have gotten there without them.

Sue and Don were an amazing team to work with. They took our ideas and designed the house of our dreams. They were always willing to go back to the drawing board and tweak an idea or offer advise on how to make the house the best it could be. It was a true pleasure working with them and couldn't be happier with the architecture and design of our home.

SD Atelier did excellent design work for our porch renovation project. We enclosed and winterized a screen porch and built an associated deck. They were partners in every phase of the project - original design, selection of contractor, materials/windows/etc, and overall quality control. I have done a large number of home remodeling/additions over the years. What I liked a lot was continual dialogue, which really helped I was not on-site for most of the time. I was extremely satisfied with their work and highly recommend SD Atelier.

Designed a screened porch with small deck and steps from the second to the first level. Completed all drawings for load limits on the roof change from different angles of the location.

Kommenteret: FireplaceYes, It is from Adirondack Natural Stone in Whitehall - and it is a blend of Blue Mountain Granite and some Adirondack Granite. They are a family owned company and really nice to work with.
