Spears Horn Architects was designated NM Firm of the Year by the American Institute of Architects in 2011. The award recognizes a tradition of professional excellence by a firm over at least a ten-year period. Spears Horn Architects was established by Beverley Spears in 1981 as a design firm focusing on residential design, landscape architecture, and historic preservation. The firm has established an excellent record of responsiveness to client needs, budget management, and timely performance of contract obligations. Spears Horn Architects currently holds over 46 awards from diverse groups: AIA NM Chapter, AIA Western Mountain Region, AIA SF Chapter, AIA/Sunset Magazine, AIA/Su Casa Magazine, Santa Fean Magazine, Southwest Contractor Magazine, NM Historic Preservation Division, City of SF, Old SF Association, NAIOP NM Chapter. We create simple, welcoming and comfortable buildings that occupants enjoy and that clients are proud to own. Beverley Spears, FAIA, is a licensed architect and landscape architect, and has practiced in Santa Fe since 1974. She has lectured widely on architectural topics and is the author of American Adobes by the UNM Press. She received the NM Architects Medal in 2000 for “contributions that have advanced the profession and the socially responsible role that architecture must perform within our greater society.” In 2002, she was honored with membership into the national College of Fellows of the AIA and was recognized as Business Woman of the Year by Santa Fe’s Business and Professional Women. In 2003, she was honored by the Old Santa Fe Association “for her contributions to the character and traditions of Santa Fe.” The major interest of the firm is to satisfy the needs and program of the client through the creation of environments that are spatially rich, articulated by sunlight and shadow, comfortable and welcoming. Respect for the surroundings and cultural context, whether urban or rural, is critical to each project. Durability and low maintenance are important aspects of our work. We look for opportunities to limit energy use, conserve water, and use non-toxic materials that are sustainably produced. We actively engage the client throughout the process to create a truly collaborative design. It is the firm’s goal to practice architecture as a fine and humanistic art serving our clients and the community. Spears Horn Architects strives to maintain the highest professional standards in all of our work.

I cannot over state how satisfying building our home was with Beverley Spears. Beverley immediately grasped how daunting this would be for two life-long apartment dwellers. By asking questions and listening to our answers she helped us recognize what we wanted and needed rather than what we thought we wanted. She was with us every step along the way from choosing the site on our property to advising us in deciding who to hire as our contractor. When it was over we had our dream house produced on time and on budget. A reflection of how positive the experience was is that Beverley and her husband Philip as well as our contractor continue in our lives as friends 14 years later.

It was the dream experience! Beverley designed a beautiful and highly liveable house. The result was beyond my expectations and more than ten years later I still marvel at it. The siting of the house was perfect and the respect for the landscape made that immediately after completion, the house looked as it always had been there. The attention to details was excellent and the project was terminated on time and respected the budget. The icing on the cake, I have a new friend!

Evelyne Thomas was a stellar client. she was decisive, creative and had an excellent eye for design, color and materials. We collaborated so well on this house and it is one of my favorites. She furnished it so beautifully which brought out the very best of the house design.

Beverley Spears is an award-winning architect with numerous important projects to her name; we selected Beverley for our new home project based on her reputation, her vast experience and her portfolio of projects of similar scope and budget. After meeting with Beverley on several occasions, we were convinced that she was the right architect for our project. Beverley listened carefully to our wants and needs, and provided strong guidance throughout the process. She employed her unique architectural and design sensibilities to our project—a challenging site in Cerros Colorados—and combined creativity with attention to detail in all aspects of the design phase, from site planning to architectural style and space utilization. She led us through the important step of selecting a general contractor (GC) by facilitating methodical interviews of several respected local GCs and then helping us weigh pro and cons of each to reach a decision. During the construction phase, Beverley held weekly site meetings with the GC to review progress, check as-built against plan, and to troubleshoot issues. Summaries of the site meetings were documented and sent to us. As we were out of town clients, the meeting notes, as well as frequent communications from Beverley and her office, were extremely helpful in keeping us informed. Beverley’s office staff are top notch and greatly contributed to making the project run smoothly from start to finish. Our project was completed on time and on budget and exceeded our expectations! We have now lived comfortably in our new home for two years and can honestly say that we still notice and appreciate the wonderful aspects of the house that we ultimately attribute to Beverley’s vision, experience and judgement.

Lori and Larry were very thoughtful, savvy and engaged clients. They understood the siting of the house and the challenge of views and terrain. We worked well together to create a very utilitarian but strikingly handsome house within their budget. It was a pleasure to work with them and to know that they are very happy with the results!

I don’t think a day goes by without us appreciating the house and gardens that James Horn of Spears Horn Architects designed for us! Not only are we pleased with the finished product, but the entire design and build process was an enjoyable collaboration. James' attention to detail with the construction documents helped make construction go smoothly and his follow through to the very end and afterward was indicative of his professionalism and commitment to us and our project.

We cannot say enough good things about Spears Horn. We hired Beverley Spears to design our life-long home on a piece of family property. The project was daunting in its longevity but Beverley tackled it head-on. She was instrumental in all steps of the process, from picking the right building site to picking out tile. Shannon, another architect in the firm, was fabulous with the detail and follow through needed to keep the project on track. Our project was finished early and on budget. And our design, while simple, always receives great praise from visitors new and old.

Joan Kendrick

Beverley is an extremely talented, conscientious, and warm-hearted architect. She listened to my husband and me and guided us through the maze of decisions in a process with which we were totally unfamiliar. Her expertise, attention to detail,and wonderful design skills have resulted in a beautiful home. The entire process, which she managed from the design to our home's completion, was fun and rewarding, and it was finished on time and within budget. The whole office pitched in at various times during the design and building, and everyone at Spears Horn Architects was a pleasure to deal with, professional and competent. The project began in the spring of of 2015 with the design of the house and the choosing of the contractor. Construction began July 1, 2014 and ended Sept. 5, 2015.

We spent over 2 years meeting with nearly 10 highly researched architectural firms. We selected Spears Horn and developed a great partnership in the design and build of our home. We remain amazed at the work and live in our dream home.
