“We came to Barley & Pfeiffer after exploring a lot of options for our old but not-distinctive house. We were impressed with the way Peter Pfeiffer's house, which we saw on a home tour, embodied sustainable building practices without looking funky. We wanted a project that would incorporate the details that we loved from our old house with smart, energy efficient construction and a contemporary layout suitable for our growing family. We found that Barley & Pfeiffer as a firm provided all the skills we needed to come out at the end with the house we wanted. Alan's design skills, Peter's building science knowledge, and Scott's detailed project management work all combined to give us a beautiful house that works really well for our family, has very low maintenance requirements, and consumes dramatically less energy than most other houses, both of a similar size and much smaller. The money we have not spent on heating and cooling this house in the past seven years could well pay for a new car. If you are going to spend the money to substantially renovate an existing home or build a new home, think carefully about what it will cost to maintain what you end up with. "Green building" is a trend now and many builders and architects claim to be "green," but few firms have the depth of expertise and years of dedication to sustainable building that Barley & Pfeiffer can provide. What you spend up front on excellent design and construction management will be recouped many times over in savings on the cost of living and maintenance. We enjoyed working with Barely & Pfeiffer and would choose them again.”

“My wife and I bought 5 acres of land in order to build our dream house. We interviewed several Architects before selecting Daniel, and we are very happy we chose him. We wanted something different from the typical suburban production house that we had in Circle C Ranch. The design process with Daniel was fun and exciting as we figured out the how to best fit our home to the sloping land. We designed a home that specifically met our site and design goals. Daniel is very creative, really thinks out of the box, but is also conscious of figuring out the most cost efficient way to get what he is looking for and still maintain the integrity of the design. He was very receptive to our ideas and had positive input and information to help us design an addition to our home. It was a complicated design equation because we had to incorporate ADA livability. His lateral thinking made our ideas for these challenges even better. Can't thank him enough for his professionalism and friendly disposition. He was also very accommodating to our difficult schedules for meetings. Can't recommend him highly enough!”

In fact, we came back to Tom Hurt Architecture for a small addition in 2014 -- who knew that a mudroom and storage space could be so beautiful and inviting? “I would highly recommend Neel. After interviewing a handful of Austin architects, yy husband and I hired Neel (out of WImberley, TX) to help us draw plans for a small bunkhouse (~1500 sq. ft) on some property we own in the Texas hill country. We wanted to use an ICF product for the house and Neel is very well versed in drawing plans using ICF (Insulated concrete forms). The product produces a home that is not only incredibly energy efficient, the walls are over 12" thick and give a fortress like feel within a small space. The house has blown us away. Neel took a small footprint and created a truly unique space that flows so well it feels twice as big as the plans indicate. The ceilings soar close to 20 feet and he has truly gone the extra mile to help source some beautiful timbers for us to use for the ceiling, beams and porches. His involvement throughout the whole project has helped us stay on schedule and budget. It is evident that he takes great pride in his work and sees our bunkhouse as a work of art (which it is). We are so pleased and will post pictures of the entire project soon.”
