“We recently sent the note below to Maurice Levitch. and thought others might find it useful: An Anniversary of sorts Maurice - it was pleasure to see you the other day, and it got Bobbye and me thinking about the work that Levitch Associates did for us in remodeling, and really in entirely rebuilding the bedroom and bathroom on the second floor of our hundred-plus year old house. We think of it as an anniversary because the work is twenty years old but, because of the expert craftsmanship, looks as if it was done yesterday. Beginning with Maurice’s truly inspired drawings, the team turned a little-used second floor enclosed sleeping porch into a vaulted ceiling main bedroom and en-suite tiled bathroom, with additional skylights bringing direct sunlight and borrowed light into both rooms and included finding space for an adjoining office/second bedroom. This bathroom is so beautiful and unusual that we still take guests on a walk through if they haven’t seen it before We live in these spaces every day, and every day they offer not just a unique sense of privacy, but an interior space that is an oasis of beauty and calm in an area of our home that had been little used before. The daily working teams that came to our house for the weeks of work needed to carry out a complex job, from top to bottom were careful, experienced, well-trained, well supervised, thoughtful and an all-around pleasure to have working on and in our house. Inevitable surprises that came up were handled quickly by people who were highly skilled at every element of the work. Watching them work, it was clear that every one of those craftsmen contributed to the highly professional outcome that we enjoy now as if still new. The mark of a good relationship. “We relocated from SE MN in 2024 with the help of Klopf Architecture, whose amazing architects -Angela Todorova and Elise Webb- redesigned my parents' East Bay home from the ground up, creating an Eichler-style open and airy mid century modern from a dark and closed off 1960 era CA ranch. They remained involved not just during the initial planning stages but during the renovation - adding their opinions and recommendations during the building process itself, working with our builders closely to optimize and finesse the renovation. “I've worked closely with Bret Walters at John Lum Architecture for the past 2+ years on what was effectively a new construction house in San Francisco, and while I'm thrilled for the client to have moved into his gorgeous new home, and couldn't be more proud of the finished product and the collaboration between me (I was the interior designer on the project) and Bret + the JLA team, I'm also honestly SO sad that I don't get to work with Bret all the time anymore. I have to admit that I was a big fan of John Lum Architecture for years before I had the opportunity to work with them; and the creative, clever, practical, and human-first design thinking they brought to every aspect of the project that I was involved in, was top-notch. They also are innovative not only in the design process but in the construction management aspects: for example, they introduced the entire project team (owner's rep, interior designer, contractor, client) to the software PlanGrid to keep track of drawings, construction issues, etc. in the cloud. To me this shows they're always exploring new technologies and ways to make their work more efficient, collaborative, and cutting-edge. And I can't say enough great things about Bret: he's extremely professional, a wealth of knowledge, a great listener / communicator, responsive, hard-working, and fun to collaborate with. He is also level-headed so that when something goes wrong in construction (which something always does), his approach is to stay focused on how to resolve and fix the issue. This project was NOT without its share of drama and sometimes-difficult personalities, and I was often impressed with Bret's ability to navigate those situations. I'd love to be able to work with Bret and the JLA team again on a future client's home. And unrelated to anything practical, John's pint-sized pitbull April is often at the office and she is my favorite office dog ever!”
