“My wife and I inherited a very difficult design project. A 200-year old farmhouse with a 100-year old farmhouse tacked onto it. Both uninhabitable, but with lots of potential, on a piece of land that both of us intended to stay on for good. Loving things old, but feeling comfortable in the modern world, we wanted to rebuild in a way that preserved of the old structure and footprint what could be preserved, and to design and build what was new along the lines of a traditional farmhouse aesthetic. We also had a definite vision of how we lived, and planned to live, in and with the space. After meeting with several architects to discuss the project, Robin came out to the site to consult. We both knew almost instantly that Robin was our architect. She took our preliminary drawings seriously, asked all the right questions, listened patiently and responsively, and most importantly, seemed genuinely interested in using her talents and training to bring our ideas into being. We called her immediately and hired her to design our old-new home. Through every step of the process, we were happy we did. Robin has a deep love for, and immense knowledge of, the architectural tradition, and she brings to her work not only a sharp eye for design possibilities, but also a rare willingness to see such possibilities where others might perceive only problems. She worked patiently with us (not around us) through every single one of our concerns, down to the smallest of details, and she worked and reworked her plans with the confidence that there existed somewhere in the process a solution that would make us happy. She was right. She delivered us a plan for a house that we are not only excited to build and live in, but one that we feel will add something of lasting beauty to the built world and to our community long after we have passed on.”

“In 2016, after researching architects in the greater Rochester, NY area we hired Design Works Architecture. PC, owned by Chuck Smith to design a custom house for us on Lake Canandaigua, NY. Chuck worked with us on every desired detail to satisfy this first-time client. His pleasant personality and patience with our suggested changes were always accepted, while providing his options and opinions which we valued. There were many difficult restrictions building on the lake in the town of Gorham where our cottage had been located for over 40 years. Through his artful design skills and influence with the Gorham Zoning Board and Planning Board, Chuck was able to get several important restrictions lifted allowing us to maximize our needs. Remarkably he was able to make the most use of our entire footprint, and particularly, by a shifting the angle of the structure, providing us with a spectacular, panoramic view of the lake, even though we were adjacent to two larger houses. Although our experience of making many decisions designing a house for the first time was often challenging and taxing, Chuck’s steady guidance and encouragement made the entire process rewarding and enjoyable resulting with a perfect house for us and our family. We highly recommend Chuck, his wife Jan, who helped with our kitchen design, as well as his other office assistants. We developed a personal relationship with Chuck and Jan, whose friendship we value. We are sure others will be highly satisfied.”
