This is my kind of kitchen! At the risk of sounding boastful, we have about 3 times as many books in our kitchen, which contains (besides, duh, cookbooks) literature (by far the most--that's my professional field), gardening, history of math and science, dance history, and humor. I find most bookshelves too deep, so the shelves in the kitchen are fairly narrow because we do, after all, have to have a table and chairs to eat at and two comfy chairs to read in while dinner is cooking. The shelves are wide enough that I can perch my mug of coffee or glass of wine on them.
In case anyone's interested: Upstairs are philosophy (my husband's professional field), Latin and Greek, religion, architecture, literary criticism and theory, and poetry. In the L-shaped living room, art and music fill a wall by the piano which also has two walls of biography and history. The kid's playroom/tv room has children's books they've outgrown but we love them too much to get rid of, film history, and PG Wodehouse. The dining room has the OED, atlases, and some other old handsome books, particularly reference, which get used a lot at dinner parties! Bathrooms have a random rotating selection. We all have bookcases in our rooms. The mudroom has a place for books in transit: library books, books to donate, etc.
At the moment, we have boxes of mysteries, French and Italian, and travel books in the attic and military history in the basement. We need more bookcases.
The owner of this lovely kitchen has way more beautiful kitchen equipment than I do, though!
My absolute dream kitchen!
This could be my dream kitchen as well... sigh... and tattycoram, you are definitely my kind of person. I don't think I could ever have "too many" books...architecture, design, art, music, literature, philosophy, science, medicine, gardening and permaculture, landscape design, veterinary care, animal science, history, Bible study and theology, fiber arts... the list is nearly endless. I LOVE to learn!
