Caroline (NC Piedmont 7B/8A) Does your Eglantyne have fantastic scent, like pure heaven alba and old rose? There's a decline in genetics through repeated grafting of the true rose onto Dr.Huey-rootstock's tissue through the decades, resulting in less scent, less healthy and less repeat.
The bed of several Eglantyne I saw at rose park back before 2010 were pure heaven to sniff, their VERY HEALTHY Eglantynes had the BEST SCENT that easily beat any old garden roses in my 160 fragrant varieties. That's the old version of Eglantyne that Krista in NY reported as her top 3 scents among her 200+ fragrant roses (before 2010).
I bought 2 Eglantynes after 2010 and neither them have much scent, only a light scent, nothing to rave about.
Years ago, the late John Moody in zone 6 wrote about how he got Peace cuttings from a friend's 40-year-old bush to make 4 rootings for himself. John noted that these EARLIER Peace blooms had better scent & constant blooming & and very healthy. He wrote on the decline of a rose through frequent grafting on Dr. Huey-rootstock (once bloomer climber prone to diseases). Grafting a rose on Dr.Huey's tissue can decline its genetics through decades of repeated grafting.
When I was 13 year old & in 1975 I was gifted Peace cut blooms from an old man who grew his roses no spray in zone 6. His many hybrid teas were healthy & constant bloomers. His Peace bloom had the most wonderful scent.
22 years later, in 1997 I grew a dozen hybrid teas, including Peace (grafted on Dr.Huey). I detected zero scent on Peace and it was a blackspot fest and didn't survive my zone 5 winter. I was enchanted by Peace vibrant colors back then.
52 years later, in 2026 I can no longer buy any grafted roses at local stores, they are either mislabeled, or having RMV virus. I'm 65.
My Pink Peace bought as own root from Roses Unlimited in 2012 had the most wonderful scent like buttercream frosting on a cake. It was healthy and constant blooming. Sadly, it died through my zone 5 winter with poor drainage clay.
After that, I kept buying many GRAFTED Pink Peace at local stores and I'm so disappointed with not much scent and blackspot prone.
I have William Shakespeare 2000 as own root since 2011, it has intense violets and old rose scent. People who got rootings from my original W.S. 2000 said that my rose smells better than the newer W.S. 2000. That's from its genetics NOT being altered by grafting on a once-bloomer climber like Dr. Huey-rootstock.
Dr. Huey-rootstock is NOT good in getting potassium for best health & blooming and can decline the genetics of a rose grafted into Dr.Huey's tissue (once bloomer climber prone to rust, mildew and blackspots).
Below is my William Shakespeare 2000, a constant bloomer in only 4 hours of morning sun, it has intense violets and old rose scent, much stronger than Munstead Wood. Very healthy, never see any diseases for the past 15 years as own root:
I have been chatting with a friend who has the old version of Abraham Darby which I saw at rose park before 2010. Their Abes. had very apricot color, less petals with sharp citrus scent. Her Abraham Darby is taller and more apricot than my newer Abe. Below is the old Abe:
Another lady in Facebook posted a double-petal, very orange old Abraham Darby which is different than her newer Abe. (more petals and pinkish). I prefer the old Abe. since it's VERY DIFFERENT from my short shrub Evelyn. Even the old Abe. featured in David Austin 2011 catalog had less petals & more orange than the new Abe. featured in David Austin 2018 catalog.
The new Abe., created by replacing its parent Yellow Cushion floribunda with Graham Thomas can have similar blooms like my short shrub Evelyn, but Abe. has taller & lanky growth & rounder & darker green leaves and less prickles on leaves. The confusion between the new Abe. and the old 1993 short shrub Evelyn is what made nurseries stop selling both.
A nearby friend has 4 CLIMBER Evelyns with pale color & button eye and stingy in blooms (mainly spring bloomer with a few blooms later). She said there's not much scent.
That's diferent from my deeper color Evelyn (SHORT SHRUB) own root bought in 2012 with constant blooming & very healthy and intense peaches scent. My Evelyn is slightly taller than red Munstead Wood (on the right edge of below pic.)
See below where Evelyn Hefner posted on 2 very different bushes of Evelyn. She wrote: "the one on the left is about 5 years old and woefully neglected and in semi-shade, but very happy! Its blooms are bubblegum pink with an intense Evelyn fragrance. From what I understand, a forceful jet of water knocks the adult thrips off the foliage and the soil being wet disrupts the pupae development. I don’t think it would be sufficient alone with a big infestation but it certainly helps manage mine.
Chilli thrips also thrive in hot dry weather so it does make sense that a little water might help. Good luck!!! I hope you find a management strategy that works for you. It sounds like they’ve been horrible for folks this year.
Im in Orange County, ca and have battled them for over 10 years. Recent captain jacks is the first thing that made a difference, but i was away and couldnt repeat in time. They came back with a vengence. I am loosing ground as it spreads. Only my 8 beautiful tea roses are affected, the floribundas are fine. so far
Because i travel a lot and am gone for extended periods of time i cannot keep up with the regular treatments anymore. I decided to yank them and replant something else, but options are limited because CT’s like about everything . I’m sad to give up but ugly bloomless plants aren’t a pleasure to see.
For me Chilli thrips come back every summer at peak hot dry weather . So washing the entire bush is good for prevention .
They affect the top of the plant & new growth mostly . As soon as I see any leaf marbling , distorted or stunted leaves I know they are back . So I trim & treat immediately .
