Kiel's woodworking talents are in full effect in the kitchen. Rather than incorporate pre-fabricated cabinets into the newly rebuilt space, he decided to build them himself, affording the home the custom work that it so deserves. "It didn't make sense to put in the same fiberboard cabinetry that was there before", he confesses. Part of the plan called for open shelving up top to show off Chelsea's colorful plate collection. "One of the perks of being married to a wood worker", Chelsea jokes, "is having an entire kitchen worth of cabinets for the cost of wood and paint!"
The couple outfitted the antique sink with a modern spray fixture from IKEA. The enameled cast iron sink was not only a steal at $25, but it is certainly made to last. "Often we buy older pieces which have been around for 50+ years because we know that if they have survived this long they will likely survive another 50", she says.

Culshaw Kitchen Makers
A retro kitchenette designed specifically for Hive Haus, a modular multi functional living space. As seen on C4 'George Clarke's Amazing Spaces' 2013 and display at Grand Designs 2014.
Culshaw were approached by friend, colleague and product designer Barry Jackson, to produce a kitchenette for the Hivehaus, a new modular living system based on the hexagon.
Barry’s vision was for a kitchenette that would be a part of his design style concept “Future Retro” a style that fused mid-century design with modern concepts to produce a retro but forward looking design principle adding a modern twist to furniture for today.
This style fitted in perfectly with Michael idea of fun and functional kitchenettes.
The Hivehaus Kitchenette is available through Hivehaus and Culshaw and looks great in any funky mid-century styled apartment.
The Hivehaus Kitchenette is also available in a narrower 1320mm width and has a Formica and plywood worktop synonymous with the original 1950’s influence.
Match Remodeling
A recent kitchen renovation in Bala Cynwyd.
We removed the dated dome lights and installed strategically placed 4” recessed lights. For under-cabinet lighting, we used a series of hardwired, non-heat producing LED lights. These are self-adhesive, paper-thin strips that provide plenty of attractive light, install easily and cost a fraction of standard under-cabinet lighting. And you can’t see them without bending down to look under the cabinets.
The new bamboo floor certainly brightened things up, as did the quartz countertops. We sought a lumberyard that carried the same dimension and profile baseboard as the rest of the house. A custom-made steel frame, topped by a matching slab of countertop, made the new kitchen table. Some new Bosch appliances, floating IKEA shelves, a few coats of Benjamin Moore paint, a custom mosaic glass tile backsplash were the finishing touches.
