Southern California Historic Beach Residence- Classic Traditional
Southern California Historic Beach Residence- Classic Traditional

An historic Spanish Colonial residence built in 1925 being redesigned and furnished for a modern-day Southern California family was the challenge. The interiors of the main house needed the backgrounds set and then a timeless collection created for its furnishings. Lifestyle was always a consideration as well as the interiors relating to the strong architecture of the residence. Natural colors such as terra cotta, tans, blues, greens, old red and soft vintage shades were incorporated throughout. Our goal was to maintain the historic character of the residence combining design elements and materials considered classic in Southern California Spanish Colonial architecture. Natural fiber textiles, leathers and woven linens were the predominated upholstery choices. A 7000 square foot basement was added and furnished to provide a gym, Star Wars theater, game areas, spa area and a simulator for indoor golf and other sports. Antiques were selected throughout the world, fine art from major galleries, custom reproductions fabricated in the old-world style. Collectible carpets were selected for the reclaimed hardwood flooring in all the areas. An estancia and garden over the basement were created and furnished with old world designs and materials as reclaimed woods, terra cotta and French limestone flooring.

The high back banquette is upholstered in a textured faux leather. Perfect for entertaining the banquette can seat 8 guests. The 19th century, hand tooled leather chairs can be pulled up to the tavern table for dining or gaming. The tavern table is a work of art, hand crafted from reclaimed materials. The table top is a carved panel from a church confessional. An antique, wrought iron, hair pin garden fence has been welded into a decorative and sturdy base. The antique wood barrels have an aged patina and decorative finish.

Doug and Chris already had a nice kitchen, but they wanted a spectacular kitchen. And unlike many clients that want something completely different, they wanted to expand upon what they already loved. The result was a beautiful and functional kitchen that reflected their love of Tuscan charm and organization. Their original flooring and color scheme were to remain but everything else would be improved upon. The appliances were all upgraded and a microwave drawer, induction cooktop, and warming drawer were added. The island with its stunning wood top and custom painted cabinets became a focal point of the kitchen. It also echoed the color and style of the dining room furniture that Chris loved. Decorative moldings, carved legs, open shelves, a wine rack and staggered cabinetry were just a few of the added details. The crowning jewels were the see-through pendant lights, that Chris found, and the travertine splash with custom decorative niche for oils and accessories and the “sparkly” granite tops. What can’t be seen in the pictures is the re-shaped soffits (to match the cabinetry below), all the inner cabinet accessories and the wall that was removed making way for a wrap-around design at the bar. Old world charm and finishes might have inspired this kitchen, but new age function and technology take this kitchen into the future with ease. Photo Credit: Alicia Villarreal
