“A house that was simple yet elegant. A space that felt like a home.” This was the brief Shalini Pereira, principal designer at SPDA, received from the homeowners. They were clear that they didn’t want their home to feel fussy and pretentious. “It had to be an easy, usable space where the kids could put their feet up on the sofas and run around,” she says.
Pereira selected a mix of materials that were natural, subtle in colour and a little raw; for instance off-white tiled flooring, panelling on walls that mimicked the look of concrete, cane, and grained veneers.

The entrance (the door at back, centre-right, in the photo) opens into a passage that culminates in the living room. A stunning piece of artwork (here, at right of the door) finds pride of place in a niche created by wooden panels that also serve to hide an electrical distribution board.
The living room at the end of the passage is clad entirely in a neutral palette that’s distinctive of the home.
Pereira says, “The main element in the living is the floor-to-ceiling veneer-panelled wall that anchors the space. Everything else works to give a harmonious understated elegance to the space.”

Coloured cushions and a pair of ottomans add punches of colour while a dark-grey built-in shelf containing curios attracts the eye.
The dining area is tucked away in the stairwell that lies midway of the passageway. Says Pereira, “The dining room was not going to be a much-used space for the client, as per their brief, so it was decided to place it in the well of the staircase with an expansive floating console unit that holds their crockery collection”. The stairwell is well lit with windows spread over the double-height wall.

The entertainment section, where the family actually eats and spends time together, is just opposite the dining area. “We have used Stonelam tile cladding on the wall, while the TV console is in walnut veneer,” Pereira says.
The large kitchen sports a melange of muted neutral shades of white, beige and brown.
The cabinetry is finished in a glossy white, while the subway tiles of the backsplash are in light taupe.

The guest room, opposite the kitchen, is one of the smallest rooms in the apartment. Concrete-look tiles, which form part of the backdrop of the bed, create an interesting element, giving the small space character and depth.
At the upper level, the staircase opens into a spacious landing with another small sitting area.
The neutral palette is punctuated with sofas in olive green, while cabinetry in wood and cane brings an old-world charm to the space.
Considering the home owner’s request for multipurpose spaces,

The kids’ bedrooms lie on either side of this passage.
The son’s room sports a slightly grungy look, achieved with the use of Bison cement sheets on the bed’s back wall, in combination with a laminate panelling that makes up the headboard of the bed.
Opposite the bed is the wardrobe, with large sliding mirrored shutters, and a study
unit. A bookshelf was created near the study table and a fun ladder added as a playful element in the room.

In the daughter’s room, the bed is set against a wall that has been divided horizontally with a wooden ledge. The wall below the ledge is finished in a jute-inspired wallpaper, while the part above is left plain.
Rows of wooden ledges opposite the bed house her books and artwork. A small window seat, with storage underneath, forms part of the study unit.
The master bedroom is a simple, yet chic affair. The focal element of the room is the bed’s backdrop – a wall panelled in a rich, decorative veneer, which has a burl-like pattern resembling knotty wood. The dark veneer is complemented by the muted tones of the wardrobe and the soft furnishings.
A replica of the Pierre-Jeanerette bench stands at the foot of the bed.
