Smashing Mosaics Stir Landscape Style
Add an art-inspired pattern to your yard through the use of stone or ceramic tile mosaics
There's something very tranquil and compelling about stones and glass swirling across the ground, creating beautifully patterned mosaics. The ripples of color and texture bring so much life to the surface of a barren patio, and the most glorious part is that they aren't all that difficult to create on your own.
The fact that mosaics are so rare in home gardens makes them all the more appealing. Maybe it's time to try one in your own yard — take a look at these inspiring examples to see what you think.

Helloooo, yoga sanctuary. I would be over the moon if I had one of these lush alcoves in my backyard. In this private and tranquil setting, a mosaic floor seems like a great hangout.
Skirted by a charming wooden pergola, this extensive patio is broken up nicely by a collection of stones patterned into snail shell forms.
If you really have no time but still want to try a mosaic in your own yard, you can always squeeze one like this onto your existing patio. I think this would be fun to do with marbles or letterpress type too.
Beautifully organic in composition and color, this gorgeous pattern has no frills and no fuss. Because the design isn't symmetrical, you won't feel nervous about messing it up. That emerald green color reminds me of a mermaid.
Surrounded by bright colors and perhaps near an ocean, this rug of stones feels right at home. What is it about these lovely patterns that whisks me away to Mexico?
I almost browsed right past this photo because I thought it was an outdoor rug! Because they usually see the highest amount of traffic in a yard, gathering places are a great area to install one of these beauts.
Maybe this is stretching the idea of a mosaic a tad — but then again, maybe not. Make sure you have a friend to help if you do a flagstone patio of this scale (those stones are heavy!). Actually, make sure you have a friend helping no matter how big the stones are, and tell them to bring some wine. And knee pads.
Garden Mosaics by Becky Paton
If you like these mosaic patterns, you may be interested in a book on the subject. I bought this one on ceramic tile mosaics, by Becky Paton, a few years ago on a whim and overlooked its beauty at the time.
Taking a second look, I noticed that it has a lot of great mosaic projects along with supplies and materials lists.

The Complete Pebble Mosaic Handbook by Maggy Howarth:
This mosaic handbook also looks promising. It explores pebble mosaics rather than ceramic ones and would be a good addition to any gardener's library.
