Making Room for Peace
We took what was basically a dark and empty playroom and turned it into something that is now bright, colorful and comfortable. Geared for the whole family, this space now meets a number of needs including: seating, play, and storage.

The built-in bookcase shown is custom made for a family room. It is now under construction. We made this photorealistic 3D render showing the interior design with two options for the shelves and decorations. You can see more details in the other photos of this project.

Love unique textures and functional statement pieces so created a one-of-a-kind DIY fireplace surround and coated in a dusty terracotta plaster.
After removing the old gaudy molding around the built-ins, we had a sleek modern look with a pop of color.
DIY plaster fireplace: $80
Repainted fireplace interior: $15
Rug: Overstock $250
Side chair: Wayfair, $200
Making Room for Peace
Inspired by the paint color, neutral furnishings and the Toano countryside, we used a calming color palette of light blues, greens, and creams. I had been eyeing this vase from a local antique store for MONTHS before finally pulling the trigger, figuring that I would probably be able to place it in a future client’s home. Well this was the home! Between the eucalyptus green color to the peaceful garden motifs, it was THE PERFECT PIECE to bring some color and peaceful vibes into this family room.

The living room was oddly shaped but left for some great space to make fun moments in the room. Here is an old bureau that served as an extension of the entryway and great storage for the living room.

Just the Thing
The family room was given added architectural detail through the addition of a complex pattern of moulding, incorporating panels of varying sizes and corner details. The original placement of the sectional sofa against the L-shaped adjoining walls made the room look off-kilter and left one wondering what to do about the space near the fireplace. Placing a console table along the short wall allowed us to move the sofa further into the room. We then designed the panelling to focus on the centre of the wall rather than its length, and then centred the sofa and wall decor on it. This lends a pleasing symmetry to the space, emphasized by the pair of candle sconces and end tables. Walls were repainted a darker tone, adding warmth and depth to the room. A large area rug anchors the sectional sofa and unifies the seating arrangement.

Making Room for Peace
It wouldn't be a Making Room for Peace project without some kind of gallery wall! Here, we used a combination of framed art depicting coastal scenes and graphic designs.
Making Room for Peace
From the very beginning, I knew that we would want to add a long console table behind the sofa to: bring the sectional forward (making it feel more apart of the room), allow for more light fixtures and to provide an opportunity to add some more color through the decor. We selected this long, narrow console table from Joss and Main, and then placed these beautiful buffet lamps on either side. The interior design store that I worked in after college, LOVED to do this in their designs. With the sectional against the wall like this, I felt that this was the perfect opportunity to implement their design technique.

Being the space where grandkids play, bible study is held, football games are watched this Toano family room serves a lot of different purposes! Here, we have some toy-storage hidden under this accent table.
