Metamorphosis Design-Build
Walnut cabinets, a patched hardwood floor in existing maple, a black, soapstone countertop, white Kitchen Aid appliances, and a white tile backsplash come together for this warm and inviting kitchen.

An addition inspired by a picture of a butler's pantry. A place for storage, entertaining, and relaxing. Craftsman decorating inspired by the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite. The owners and I, with a bottle of red wine, drew out the final design of the pantry in pencil on the newly drywalled walls. The cabinet maker then came over for final measurements.
This was part of a larger addition. See "Yosemite Inspired Family Room" for more photos.

Mission, Craftsman, Arts and Crafts style kitchen. Quarter sawn White Oak with a traditional cherry stain. The simple lines and beautiful yet not overpowering grain of the wood, make this country kitchen truly timeless.
Carved Custom Cabinets
This Spanish colonial panel style from carvedcabinet.com (Carved Custom Cabinets) was inspired by a 200 year old, small, hand carved trunk on legs displayed in the Museum of New Mexico. It was found in a village north of Santa Fe. The trim surrounding the panels was inspired by a book on the history of woodworking in New Mexico. Finished in a honey (Miel) with dark glaze to bring out the carving and medium distressing.
The full wall treatment using azul palido tiles is enhanced by insets of tile inspired by the folk art images taken from the vintage Mexican game of 'Lotteria'. The 'Lotteria' tile was designed and made specifically for this exciting project in Tesuque, New Mexico.

Sustainable Kitchens
Sustainable Kitchens - Colour by Numbers Kitchen. Colourful flat panelled plywood cabinets with routed pulls painted in Farrow & Ball colours. A small centre island painted in Babouche maximises worktop space with a built in extending kneading board. Oak floor boards and stainless steel worktops finish this kitchen's quirky design.

The Finished Kitchen Makeover AFTER: Megan assured me we could get a sophisticated, Danish-inspired look easily with a few clever reinterpretations of the list above. Even better, she said it would involve no demolition, permits, or having to stay elsewhere while my kitchen was in ruins. “You might look at a less-than-beautiful kitchen and think ripping out cabinets or tearing up floors is the only solution,” says Megan. “But I wanted to show how truly transforming a total wash of paint color can be. It has the power to unify disparate finishes and forgives any imperfections.”
Here’s the step-by-step evolution of my hovel of a kitchen into a dead ringer for the Danish beauty.

This kitchen addition project is an expansion of an old story and a half South Bozeman home.

This old house has been remodeled and added onto many times over. A complete demolition and rebuild of this structure would be the best course of action, but we are in a historic neighborhood and we will be working with it as is. Budget is an issue as well, so in addition to the second story addition, we are limiting our renovation efforts to the kitchen and bathroom areas at the back the house. We are making a concerted effort to not get into too much of the existing front half of this house.
This is precisely the type of remodeling work that requires a very skilled and experienced builder. And I emphasize experienced. We are lucky to be working with Luke Stahlberg of Ibex Builders. Luke is a talented local Bozeman contractor with years of experience in the remodeling industry. Luke is very methodical and well organized. This is a classic remodeling project with enough detail to really test a contractor’s skill and experience.
