Vicki Simon Interior DesignA custom bookcase for cookbook collection was built from recycled wood. Maker was found at a local home show in Portland. All furniture pieces were made or found and selected/designed maximizing height to accentuate tall ceilings. The vestibule in the background shows tiny space added by new nib walls as entry way to existing bathroom. Best & CompanyPaired with a Saarinen pedestal table, an upholstered banquette—fabricated and installed by Best & Company—makes full use of a formerly underutilized kitchen corner, now a site for morning coffee, conversation with the cook, and catching up on work before dashing out the door. The dark-stained wood on the frame and adjacent set-back cabinet add natural warmth to the all-white room without detracting from its sense of spaciousness.

AHMANN LLCAn open plan within a traditional framework was the Owner’s goal - for ease of entertaining, for working at home, or for just hanging out as a family. We pushed out to the side, eliminating a useless appendage, to expand the dining room and to create a new family room. Large openings connect rooms as well as the garden, while allowing spacial definition. Additional renovations included updating the kitchen and master bath, as well as creating a formal office paneled in stained cherry wood.

Architect Mason Kirby Inc.Removing a few walls opens up this little living room to the adjacent dining room, and keeps the cozy feeling without the claustrophobia. New built-in book shelves flank the fireplace, providing ample library space for window seat reading. A hanging chandelier provides light an elegant atmosphere, added to by matching pink chairs, ivory busts, and large area rugs. Dark wood furniture in the dining room adds gravity and a nice contrast to the auburn wood floors, grey walls, and white detailed moldings. This cozy retreat is in the Panhandle in San Francisco.
