BC&J ArchitectureThe Back Bay House is comprised of two main structures, a nocturnal wing and a daytime wing, joined by a glass gallery space. The daytime wing maintains an informal living arrangement that includes the dining space placed in an intimate alcove, a large country kitchen and relaxing seating area which opens to a classic covered porch and on to the water’s edge. The nocturnal wing houses three bedrooms. The master at the water side enjoys views and sounds of the wildlife and the shore while the two subordinate bedrooms soak in views of the garden and neighboring meadow.
To bookend the scale and mass of the house, a whimsical tower was included to the nocturnal wing. The tower accommodates flex space for a bunk room, office or studio space. Materials and detailing of this house are based on a classic cottage vernacular language found in these sorts of buildings constructed in pre-war north america and harken back to a simpler time and scale. Eastern white cedar shingles, white painted trim and moulding collectively add a layer of texture and richness not found in today’s lexicon of detail. The house is 1,628 sf plus a 228 sf tower and a detached, two car garage which employs massing, detail and scale to allow the main house to read as dominant but not overbearing.

Eco+Historical, Inc.This 1889 Victorian underwent a gut rehabilitation in 2010-2012 to transform it from a dilapidated 2BR/1BA to a 5BR/4BA contemporary family home. The large kitchen includes a walk-in pantry, built-in breakfast nook and butcher block island counter. A fresh and modern all-white palette was chosen with hand-made backsplash tile. A built-in bill paying desk to the left of the kitchen sports chalkboard paint on the wall. This house achieved a LEED Platinum green certification from the US Green Building Council in 2012.

Dura Supreme CabinetryDiana Wiesner of Lampert Lumber in Chetek, WI worked with her client and Dura Supreme to create this custom teal blue paint color for their new kitchen. They wanted a contemporary cottage styled kitchen with blue cabinets to contrast their love of blue, red, and yellow. The homeowners can now come home to a stunning teal (aqua) blue kitchen that grabs center stage in this contemporary home with cottage details.

This kitchen was featured in HGTV Magazine summer of 2014 in the Kitchen Chronicles. Here's a quote from the designer's interview that was featured in the issue. "Every time you enter this kitchen, it's like walking into a Caribbean vacation. It's upbeat and tropical, and it can be paired with equally vivid reds and greens. I was worried the homeowners might get blue fatigue, and it's definitely a gutsy choice for a rural Wisconsin home. Kristen SchravenInitially the kitchen was divinded into two rooms, a dark, dated galley kitchen and unused dining space. The young, modern professional who lifed here found she rarely used either room. The style was undeserving of the South End updated buildsing. By removing the wall down the middles nad opening the area up to the living room we created and open entertaining space where the client can sit for dinner with friend or work on her laptop while dinners is in the stove. The style is a beautiful mix of classical elements with a modern touch.
