Embracing the challenge of grounding this open, light-filled space, our Boulder studio focused on comfort, ease, and high design. The built-in lounge is flanked by storage cabinets for puzzles and games for this client who loves having people over. The high-back Living Divani sofa is paired with U-Turn Benson chairs and a "Rabari" rug from Nanimarquina for casual gatherings. The throw pillows are a perfect mix of Norwegian tapestry fabric and contemporary patterns. In the child's bedroom, we added an organically shaped Vitra Living Tower, which also provides a cozy reading niche. Bold Marimekko fabric colorfully complements more traditional detailing and creates a contrast between old and new. We loved collaborating with our client on an eclectic bedroom, where everything is collected and combined in a way that allows distinctive pieces to work together. A custom walnut bed supports the owner's tatami mattress. Vintage rugs ground the space and pair well with a vintage Scandinavian chair and dresser. Combining unexpected objects is one of our favorite ways to add liveliness and personality to a space. In the little guest bedroom, our client (a creative and passionate collector) was the inspiration behind an energetic and eclectic mix. Similarly, turning one of our client's favorite old sweaters into pillow covers and popping a Native American rug on the wall helped pull the space together. Slightly eclectic and invitingly cozy, the twin guestroom beckons for settling in to read, nap or daydream. A vintage poster from Omnibus Gallery in Aspen and an antique nightstand add period whimsy. --- Joe McGuire Design is an Aspen and Boulder interior design firm bringing a uniquely holistic approach to home interiors since 2005. The Bedroom is simple and functional. To keep the bedroom feeling open and welcoming, we widened the doorway and built a wide sliding barn door with an antiqued milk paint finish and installed a steel track with vintage barn door rollers. We installed antique barnboard to act as an accent wall to compliment the exposed brick and beam. For storage, we built a floor to ceiling built-in armoire, wardrobe, dresser and shoe cabinet with bi-fold doors to save space.

photos: Matthew Millman This 1100 SF space is a reinvention of an early 1960s unit in one of two semi-circular apartment towers near San Francisco’s Aquatic Park. The existing design ignored the sweeping views and featured the same humdrum features one might have found in a mid-range suburban development from 40 years ago. The clients who bought the unit wanted to transform the apartment into a pied a terre with the feel of a high-end hotel getaway: sleek, exciting, sexy. The apartment would serve as a theater, revealing the spectacular sights of the San Francisco Bay.

In the elegant and sophisticated bedroom designed for the old couple, a sense of timeless beauty emanates. The bed, with its dark teakwood frame and plush beige upholstery, exudes a regal charm. The backdrop of the bed, adorned with stripped wallpaper in soothing brown and beige tones, creates a serene atmosphere. The bedside tables, with their rustic charm reminiscent of farm-style wooden side tables, add a touch of warmth and nostalgia. Together, these elements create a space where simplicity and refinement coexist, providing a haven of comfort and tranquility for the couple to retreat and rejuvenate.

The white master bedroom with it's board and batten paneling, it's row of large double hung windows, and high ceilings speak to the traditional plantation styling of the home. We decorated the bedroom with natural stained wood dresser, a beautiful cane bed frame, and a natural jute rug. The bed covering is a tradition Hawaiian quilt in green and white, and the artwork above the bed is by local artist Jamie Allen.

This new project is a sustainable flats concept for Philadelphia. Two single homes in disrepair were removed and replaced with three single-level, house-sized flats that are ideal for entertaining or families. Getting light deep into the space was the central design challenge for this green project and resulted in an open floor-plan as well as an interior courtyard that runs vertically through the core of the property. Making the most of this urban lot, on-site parking and private outdoor spaces were integrated into the rear of the units; secure bike storage is located in the courtyard, with additional unit storage in the basement.

Chipper HatterThis adorable beach cottage is in the heart of the village of La Jolla in San Diego. The goals were to brighten up the space and be the perfect beach get-away for the client whose permanent residence is in Arizona. Some of the ways we achieved the goals was to place an extra high custom board and batten in the great room and by refinishing the kitchen cabinets (which were in excellent shape) white. We created interest through extreme proportions and contrast. Though there are a lot of white elements, they are all offset by a smaller portion of very dark elements. We also played with texture and pattern through wallpaper, natural reclaimed wood elements and rugs. This was all kept in balance by using a simplified color palate minimal layering. I am so grateful for this client as they were extremely trusting and open to ideas.
