RoomService 360The room service 360° collection of modern furniture by powerhouse design firm Cattelan Italia is unmatched in its scope and diversity. Italian designer Giorgio Cattelan and his wife Silvia founded the company in 1979. Their goal was to create contemporary furnishings for the home that reflected and enhanced the modern life style experience. Today, the couple’s son, Paolo Cattelan, continues the company’s tradition of producing fine Italian modern furniture imbued with innovative style and sophistication.
SkB ArchitectsOriginally built in 1955, this modest penthouse apartment typified the small, separated living spaces of its era. The design challenge was how to create a home that reflected contemporary taste and the client’s desire for an environment rich in materials and textures. The keys to updating the space were threefold: break down the existing divisions between rooms; emphasize the connection to the adjoining 850-square-foot terrace; and establish an overarching visual harmony for the home through the use of simple, elegant materials.
The renovation preserves and enhances the home’s mid-century roots while bringing the design into the 21st century—appropriate given the apartment’s location just a few blocks from the fairgrounds of the 1962 World’s Fair.
Carlton EdwardsThe master suite was recreated into a master foyer. In the master bedroom, custom furniture pieces were carefully designed. The bed is framed in walnut with upholstered inset panels and floating bedside tables, which are walnut and steel.
Sconces are incorporated into the headboard above the floating bedside tables. The art piece above the bed was commissioned from a local artist, Curt Meer. We also custom designed a bench for the bay window, which is steel and blue mohair.
The window treatments throughout the house are natural white linen, the same color as the walls. The drapery tracks are all flush with the ceiling.
