A garden for plant lovers was designed for a professional couple in the front (and only) garden of their lower villa conversion. The garden was designed on an angle, taken from the angles of the bay windows of the house, which not only offered depth to the garden, but also connected the garden to the house. The lawn was replaced by planting beds edged in beautiful clay pavers (Vande Moortel), which were also used to create the patio. The clay pavers toned in perfectly with the existing brick boundary wall and the buff sandstone of the house. An additional seating area was created looking through the beautifully made metal archway from Made by More. The planting scheme for the existing borders was redesigned to connect with the overall scheme of the garden and were replanted summer 2019 (after these photos were taken). Rachel Bailey Garden Design Ltd designed the garden and the planting scheme and sourced planted from Macplants.co.uk and Maclarens Nurseries. The garden was built and planted up by the clients.

The front garden and facade of this Bungalow were given a make over to make the property more appealing for resale. Updated paint colours, repairs to the sandstone driveway and a revamp of the garden add immeasurable street appeal with minimal change required.

Our brief for this project was to unify the space, incorporating the office at the end of the garden with the house and garden with a pleasing view from all vantage points. It also had to be child-friendly, with spaces to climb and play, without compromising on style. The new garden has two seating areas. Directly outside the patio doors is a Modak Indian sandstone patio laid in a random pattern and large enough to accommodate an outdoor sofa and chairs. Cutting into this patio and leading down the centre of the garden is a hardwood decking walkway with a step up in the middle to allow for the change in levels. Installed in the walkway is a 300mm wide stainless steel water rill, fed by a stainless steel water blade set into a slate V-tile clad feature wall. The water runs down the rill to feed into a pebble filled channel. A large Trachycarpus fortunei placed on the corner of the patio creates a focal point to the space. And towards the rear of the main garden a “monkey bar” pergola is installed parallel with the span of the existing building, with decked block steps constructed behind the feature wall to allow access to the bars above. Underneath the pergola a strip of artificial lawn will provide a soft landing. A second smaller Indian sandstone patio runs along the front of the building at the back. A decorative moulded timber screen creates a secret area at the rear of the garden and hides the storage area from view. Planting in the garden is mainly whites and yellows with the odd splash of orange. Tropical leaves, silvery evergreens, long flowering perennials and tall yellow spires provide a full planting scheme with year round interest.

Refurbishment of a Grade II* Listed Country house with outbuildings in the Cotswolds. The property dates from the 17th Century and was extended in the 1920s by the noted Cotswold Architect Detmar Blow. The works involved significant repairs and restoration to the stone roof, detailing and metal windows, as well as general restoration throughout the interior of the property to bring it up to modern living standards. A new heating system was provided for the whole site, along with new bathrooms, playroom room and bespoke joinery. A new, large garden room extension was added to the rear of the property which provides an open-plan kitchen and dining space, opening out onto garden terraces.

Our client had a large property in Warrandyte with Yarra frontage and wanted a pool for relaxation and entertaining that would reflect the natural beauty of their land. There was an existing mud brick hut with character that was being used as a woodshed. The hut provided an opportunity to design the pool around, with it being transformed into a studio/pool house. A natural billabong style pool was designed to complement the existing landscape. Finished were all selected to blend with the natural colour palette. The pool is tiled with Bizassa Dehli glass mosaics that creates a natural dark green coloured water that provides a brilliant mirror to reflect the surrounding trees. Bluestone paving was hand cut and bull nosed on site to suit the unique shape. Natural rocks were used in between the coping to add dimension and enhance the rugged look of the landscape. One of the rocks included a feature that incorporates the sound of water running over the rock to add a tranquil ambience. The pool has a large shallow ledge area at one end, the perfect spot for lazing in the sun, with several ledges scattered throughout the pool creating spots to sit and relax. The mud hut and paving are connected by a timber decking that has a lounging and outdoor dining area, making this space not only look amazing, but highly functional for the client. Further outlining the level of detail undertaken the pool fence was hand crafted from natural timber and wire mesh to create a farm style fence. The pool is fully automated with an infloor cleaning system added to reduce maintenance for the client. It features and automatic salt chlorinator with chlorine and pH control to keep the water in balance. One of the main challenges that presented itself with this project was due to its location there was a high volume of protected trees. Although a unique challenge, the team knew this project would look its best with the original landscape preserved, therefore gaining construction access required town planning permits and careful research and consideration of the trees root zones determined the shape and location of the pool.
