Plush Design InteriorsA lovingly cared for mid-century home was very original, but not functional or with modern appliances. With a nod to the bones and heritage of the home, the new kitchen was designed with a retro feel. The pantry and fridge were relocated but the original footprint largely adhered too. The raked ceilings are original but the original kitchen was entirely removed. A servery window was added to easily access the al fresco area. The combination of black and wood grain cabinets with white countertops were designed for modern function, but copper door handles and smoke glass splashback add a retro feel.

piquThis stylish and sophisticated dark grey German handle less kitchen in Hayes features an ‘L’ shaped layout with a peninsular island. This allows for the open plan living space to be perfectly zoned. There is a practical ‘work-space’ on one side with the Siemens induction hob, ovens, fridge and freezer and seating on the other which is great for entertaining. Silestone Nilo has been used for the worktops and Silestone Kensho on the waterfall Island. Both from Cosentino.
UserThis kitchen is a wheelchair accessible kitchen designed by Adam Thomas of Design Matters. With height-adjustable worktops, acrylic doors and brushed steel handles for comfortable use with impaired grip. The hob area is height adjustable and raised edges have been added to all four sides of all worktops to contain hot spills and reduce the risk of injury. A very large knee space has been created under the hob so that turns in and out of the space can be made with the minimum of repositioning, offering great knee access. Note the absence of trailing wires and worktop supports under worktop height. They are contained in a space behind the modesty panel and recessed into the underside of the worktop to protect knees and wheelchair footplate from dangerous snags. There are safety stops on all four edges of the rise and fall unit, including the bottom edge of the modesty panel, to protect feet. A Neff Slide and Hide oven has been specified for safer access, coupled with a slimline pullout shelf for safe transferring and lap protection. A Neff induction hob is a much safer alternative to an electric or gas hob, being easier to clean and retaining much less residual heat after use. Photographs by Jonathan Smithies Photography. Renovation Management by Bastani ConsultantsA wood stove makes for a warm and cosy space. This Vermont Castings wood stove is both top and side loading. The top loading option eliminates mess from the ash falling out when the side doors are opened and it can be loaded with more wood to burn. This wood stove is also designed for cooking on top and during winter most of the cooking is done on it. Because this property includes its own woods and has an endless supply of fire wood, this wood burning stove plays a large part in the energy efficiency of this home. This 3500 sf home has an average electric and gas bill of £30/mo each (2015)!
