When the original brief for this home came to Shonali Mahajan, founder of Studio Wodehouse, it was for a 4-bedroom show flat. “We were approached directly by the developer to redesign the interiors of the model apartment into one that reflected a joint family setup. Of the four bedrooms, we envisioned one as a master bedroom, one as a kids’ bedroom, one as a parent’s bedroom and one as a guest bedroom. We focused on keeping the aesthetic bold, that was also contemporary,” says Mahajan.
However, during the course of the project Mahajan’s brief underwent a metamorphosis. “The client decided to gift the apartment to his newlywed daughter and her husband, and the flat went from being a model venture to a full-fledged home. And the specifications changed,” she adds.

“The living room features a luxurious material palette. We’ve used Italian marble tiles on the floor, set in a harlequin pattern and embelllished with brass inlays,” notes Mahajan.

Closer to the front door, a little ahead of the living room, lies a contemporary dining area, with a custom tungsten chandelier overhead. A polished oval dining table acts as the centrepiece.

The living room connects to a rainforest-inspired powder room that exudes a fun and quirky aesthetic. The space is cocooned in a bold tropical-themed wallpaper, and hosts a rugged wood counter with moody charcoal-toned sanitary fittings.

The sleek kitchen carries forward a similar woodland-inspired colour scheme, going beyond a monochrome palette. Its clean-lined but earthy look sports a backsplash of olive-green ceramic tiles and a Corian countertop.
The master bedroom is outfitted in soft layers of beige. The headboard stands backed against the window so that the bed faces the television and shelving unit on the opposite wall. Any other layout would have meant less space for wall displays, says Mahajan.
A little further ahead, opposite the bedroom’s main entrance, lies the entryway to a walk-in closet and bathroom.

Originally planned as a kids’ room, this bedroom is now used as a spare room by the couple. “The room breathes lightness and openness, thanks to the breezy floral wallpaper and the unfussy lightweight desk,” Mahajan says.

The third bedroom, designed as the parents’ bedroom according to the original brief, is a serene oasis of cream, soft gold and white. The bed, covered in an understated gold duvet, channels attention to the walls, clad in a bespoke Nandi-print wallpaper.

A flipper chair and footrest occupy a quiet corner of the bedroom, serving as an idyllic retreat, perfect for reading or resting.
The fourth bedroom, originally a guest bedroom, was turned into a lounge, following the change of brief. “Since this space was secluded from the larger living area, we decided to give it a playful edge with exaggerated colour and experimental accents,” Mahajan says.
She adds, “We painted the wall a deep green and offset it with an ivory-toned sofa. We also dressed the floor with a bold black-and-white printed dhurrie.”

“Part of our brief was to draw attention away from the busy exterior landscape into the interior of the home. We deliberately huddled the furniture towards the centre of the room, a safe distance away from the windows,” says Mahajan.
