Mumbai Houzz: A Bright & Airy Flat Has a Touch of the Tropics
Light colours and uncluttered spaces give this apartment by Ariyona Interior an open feel even in the middle of crowded Mumbai suburbs
Rittika Chokhany, designer and founder of Ariyona Interior, was given the brief to keep the interiors of this Mumbai home light and airy. Though ‘white and light’ is not her usual style, the designer creatively adhered to the client’s request. She designed a modern, functional and spacious apartment, adding visual interest with a fusion of textures, patterns and small elements.
The passage leads to the living and dining area. The airy feel of the apartment is enhanced by the floor-to-ceiling windows that form a glass wall.
The designer has used lots of natural textures, such as live-edge wood, cane, wool and cork. The plants adorning the area add a burst of fresh green and give it a tropical vibe.

The dining space is at the far end of the living space. A tropical forest wallpaper behind the dining table completes the forested look. The monochrome soft greys keep the effect light and subtle – where a full-colour design would have hemmed in the space, the whites and greys visually expand it.
“We dreamt of the feel of a tropical forest in an apartment in the middle of a crowded suburb in Mumbai … and I think we pretty much achieved it. You can sit in this living room and forget the crowds and noise of the city below for a while,” Chokhany says.

A bar unit is tucked into the wall behind the dining table.
“We wanted to fit in a bar without adding a large, bulky unit. We did this by enclosing the bar in the wall between the dining and kids bedroom. The shelves fit into the thickness of the wall and are deep enough to hold glasses. The wine cooler slides through the wall into the space holding the kid’s wardrobe behind it,” says the designer.
Beyond the living and dining area is another passage, which leads to the bedrooms, including the master bedroom.

Though the master bedroom is prominently done up in grey, black and white, an interplay of patterns and textures add depth to the space.

The tropical feel is reinforced through a wallpaper on the wall that adds a texture to the space, suggesting a bamboo structure.
The black-and-white Aztec-pattern cushions on the swing chair continue the bedroom’s colour and pattern theme.

The grandparents’ bedroom has been done up in clean tones. “Simple, solid wood furniture, pastel colours and traditional patterns have been used in this space,” says Chokhany.

The daughter’s bedroom dispenses with a conventional bed. “A mattress in the large window makes up our bed and leaves the rest of the room free to do as we please,” Chokhany says.

The door opens into a narrow passage. “One of the items on the clients’ wish list was to have some inlay work along the entrance passage. We cut strips in the existing flooring and laid out a geometric black inlay to create a dramatic entryway,” says Chokhany.
