“‘Comfortable’ and ‘homey’ were two adjectives that underscored the brief given to us by the clients, Sunil and Shelja Jose,” says Huzefa Rangwala, co-founder and director of design studio MuseLAB. “They wanted a functional and simple space, seeded equally in classic and contemporary sensibilities. We developed a functional design scheme focused on combining, layering and contrasting materials. Our primary palette, composed of yellow-toned birch ply and deep-hued walnut wood, conjured a play and dialogue between dark and light, vintage and voguish, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.”

The dining area, characterised by rugged textures and darker hues, lies just behind the living zone. A walnut-wood dining table, flanked by ash-wood chairs on one side and a walnut-wood bench on the other, serves as a warming antidote for the brooding surrounding palette. A cement-sheet-panelled wall, highlighted by a walnut-wood bar unit, acts as the backdrop for the dining zone. A row of brass-embellished terracotta pendant lights bathe the dining area in a distinctive glow, while lush green plants infuse natural freshness into the interior scheme.
“We maximised the channels of natural light in the living and dining areas. As a result, both areas require no artificial lighting until early evening. The flow of sunlight not only brightens up these spaces, but also augments the spatial effect,” says Rangwala.

The kitchen, situated to the left of the living zone, is a glass-clad jewel box. “The kitchen is not lost or ignored in the corner. It holds its own, yet manages to merge seamlessly with the design of the rest of the home,” notes Pirani.

The kitchen features vintage Spanish-style tile work, daisy countertops and a Himalayan stone breakfast counter. The cabinetry is rooted in duality, with deep-toned under-counter cabinets and walnut upper cabinets presenting two distinct shades and wood grains. The breakfast bar is carved as a knock-back zone, ideal for lazy breakfasts and conversations over cooking.

The master bedroom is muted and minimalist, dominated by neutral shades, soft fabrics and pared-back finishes. The perforated headboard, held by a walnut-wood frame, models an interplay of textures. A deep-grey custom-made sofa stands guard at the foot of the walnut wood bed, while a shag carpet and complementary throw give the space a tactile element.

The daughters’ bedroom is swathed in shades of pistachio and cream. The twin beds are enlivened by tall, sleek headboards that mirror the veneer of the cabinets. Simple wall art and table accents add pep to the decor scheme while allowing the furniture to take centre stage.
On the opposite wall, a floating desk offers a useful study surface for the room’s pint-sized residents. The mint lamp is a nod to the room’s dominant pale green palette while the cobalt chair injects a cheery pop of colour into the peripheral nudes and neutrals.

In the guest bedroom, a custom-designed walnut-wood sofa-cum-bed allows the room to masquerade as a den or a study. To the right are a walnut-wood wardrobe and a freestanding desk. The latter features a circular bookend that can be swivelled forwards for extra privacy.

The powder room showcases a melange of shapes, forms and materials. The hexagonal-tiled wall adds character to the otherwise spartan decor, while the basin, customised on site from vitrified tiles, steals the spotlight with its unique design.
