The owners were a blend of traditional and modern tastes, so the Calgary Grand Custom Luxury Home was a stunning fusion of the two styles including: Glulam beams, 900 sq ft great room, Gorgeous natural stone work and custom millwork throughout.

The family room has a long wall of built-in cabinetry as well as floating shelves in a wood tone that coordinates with the floor and fireplace mantle. Wood beams run along the ceiling and wainscoting is an element we carried throughout this room and throughout the house. A dark charcoal gray quartz countertop coordinates with the dark gray tones in the kitchen.

This open floor plan family room for a family of four—two adults and two children was a dream to design. I wanted to create harmony and unity in the space bringing the outdoors in. My clients wanted a space that they could, lounge, watch TV, play board games and entertain guest in. They had two requests: one—comfortable and two—inviting. They are a family that loves sports and spending time with each other.
One of the challenges I tackled first was the 22 feet ceiling height and wall of windows. I decided to give this room a Contemporary Rustic Style. Using scale and proportion to identify the inadequacy between the height of the built-in and fireplace in comparison to the wall height was the next thing to tackle. Creating a focal point in the room created balance in the room. The addition of the reclaimed wood on the wall and furniture helped achieve harmony and unity between the elements in the room combined makes a balanced, harmonious complete space.
Bringing the outdoors in and using repetition of design elements like color throughout the room, texture in the accent pillows, rug, furniture and accessories and shape and form was how I achieved harmony. I gave my clients a space to entertain, lounge, and have fun in that reflected their lifestyle.

While studying the existing floor plan, it became clear that the Oakwood Residence kitchen either needed to be relocated or better integrated to the rest of the building. Originally tucked in a back corner of the house, it was dark and disconnected from the living spaces as kitchens often were in the early 1900s. We saw this as an opportunity to add a light-filled gathering spot that serves to connect and orient the interior and exterior social zones.
Kitchen countertops are Luca di Luna quartzite. Cabinets are custom frameless back-painted glass in Benjamin Moore Dragon's Breath with walnut interiors. Fireplace surround is custom Negresco Honed granite with walnut paneling above. Floors are Woodpecker Harlech Raw Oak.

Projet Wabi-sabi
