Susan Yeley HomesLike most of our projects, we can't gush about this reno—a new kitchen and mudroom, ensuite closet and pantry—without gushing about the people who live there. The best projects, we always say, are the ones in which client, contractor and design team are all present throughout, conception to completion, each bringing their particular expertise to the table and forming a cohesive, trustworthy team that is mutually invested in a smooth and successful process. They listen to each other, give the benefit of the doubt to each other, do what they say they'll do. This project exemplified that kind of team, and it shows in the results.
Most obvious is the opening up of the kitchen to the dining room, decompartmentalizing somewhat a century-old bungalow that was originally quite purposefully compartmentalized. As a result, the kitchen had to become a place one wanted to see clear through from the front door. Inset cabinets and carefully selected details make the functional heart of the house equal in elegance to the more "public" gathering spaces, with their craftsman depth and detail. An old back porch was converted to interior space, creating a mudroom and a much-needed ensuite walk-in closet. A new, larger deck went on: Phase One of an extensive design for outdoor living, that we all hope will be realized over the next few years. Finally, a duplicative back stairwell was repurposed into a walk-in pantry.
Modernizing often means opening spaces up for more casual living and entertaining, and/or making better use of dead space. In this re-conceptualized old house, we did all of that, creating a back-of-the-house that is now bright and cheerful and new, while carefully incorporating meaningful vintage and personal elements.
The best result of all: the clients are thrilled. And everyone who went in to the project came out of it friends.

This award-winning kitchen remodel restored the space to its original character of the classically-inspired craftsman. Un-laquered brass plumbing and lighting fixtures will patina over time, as will the classic "card catalog" cabinet drawer pulls. A simple and practical rectangular plan around a central island reorients the space towards the outdoors and the new classical stair landing.
Kitchen Studio: Kansas CityThis family compound is located on acerage in the Midwest United States. The pool house featured here has many kitchens and bars, ladies and gentlemen locker rooms, on site laundry facility and entertaining areas.

Scenic Interiors, LLCWe completely remodeled an outdated, poorly designed kitchen that was separated from the rest of the house by a narrow doorway. We opened the wall to the dining room and framed it with an oak archway. We transformed the space with an open, timeless design that incorporates a counter-height eating and work area, cherry inset door shaker-style cabinets, increased counter work area made from Cambria quartz tops, and solid oak moldings that echo the style of the 1920's bungalow. Some of the original wood moldings were re-used to case the new energy efficient window.
Kitcheart LLCThis was a kitchen renovation of a mid-century modern home in Peoria, Illinois. The galley kitchen needed more storage, professional cooking appliances, and more connection with the living spaces on the main floor. Kira Kyle, owner of Kitcheart, designed and built-in custom cabinetry with a gray stain finish to highlight the grain of the hickory. Hardware from Pottery Barn in brass. Appliances form Wolf, Vent-A-Hood, and Kitchen Aid. Reed glass was added to the china cabinets. The cabinet above the Kitchen Aid mixer was outfitted with baking storage. Pull-outs and extra deep drawers made storage more accessible. New Anderson windows improved the view. Storage more than doubled without increasing the footprint, and an arched opening to the family room allowed the cook to connect with the rest of the family.

Donald A. Gardner Architects Twin dormers, board-and-batten siding and stone add curb appeal to this charming Craftsman design. Two decks, a screened porch and spacious patio provide plenty of room for outdoor entertaining. An open floor plan allows easy traffic flow, while counters in the kitchen and utility/mudroom offer ample workspace. From decorative ceilings and columns to fireplaces and a shower seat, niceties are abundant.
