Mark Brand ArchitectureThe design of this remodel of a small two-level residence in Noe Valley reflects the owner's passion for Japanese architecture. Having decided to completely gut the interior partitions, we devised a better-arranged floor plan with traditional Japanese features, including a sunken floor pit for dining and a vocabulary of natural wood trim and casework. Vertical grain Douglas Fir takes the place of Hinoki wood traditionally used in Japan. Natural wood flooring, soft green granite and green glass backsplashes in the kitchen further develop the desired Zen aesthetic. A wall to wall window above the sunken bath/shower creates a connection to the outdoors. Privacy is provided through the use of switchable glass, which goes from opaque to clear with a flick of a switch. We used in-floor heating to eliminate the noise associated with forced-air systems.

プライバシーを確保しながら、通りに対しても緑や余白を配し緩やかに空間を分けている。
軒や格子が日本的な陰影をつくりだし、庭との境界を曖昧にし、四季折々の風景を何気ない日々の日常に感じながら暮らすことのできる住まい。
北側は、薪置き場をデザインし目隠し壁としている
定期的に、薪を搬入することを考慮し敷地内での車寄せのスペース確保や敷地内への薪の搬入路をメインの動線とは別に計画している。
arbol一級建築士事務所 正面玄関。外壁と同様の引き戸は、さまざまな樹種の無垢板を張り分けています。インドアコートの中庭に該当する箇所は風が抜けるように壁にスリットを設けています。
