This garden takes advantage of the chimney tops and attics spaces of the urban landscape of the Back Bay- we refer to it as "Mary-Poppinsville". Split in to two areas- seating and dinning/cooking. shrubs, perennials, annuals, and edibles including: herbs, tomatoes, The client is a gourmet chef and uses the foods in his cooking. With limited space, the most popular edible plants that clients ask for are tomatoes and herbs because the herbs can be used in daily cooking and theres nothing to compare to the homegrown tomato. Where space is generous, we also plant blueberries strawberries, raspberries, lettuces, peppers.

A family of avid hikers, surfers, and all-around outdoor enthusiasts asked us to create a rooftop family gathering space that better connected their lives to the natural wonders of the Golden Gate. Built smack dab in the middle of (and above) an existing three-story house, our biggest challenges were (in order of sleepless nights), waterproofing, concealing steel beams and columns, and detailing quality and sustainable materials that will withstand exposure to the rugged coastal elements. It was a great pleasure to work with clients who appreciate how the built environment can complement the natural. It is our hope that the design celebrates this connection for years to come. Even the smallest rooftop terrace can be an inviting retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. This garden was designed with softness, femininity, romance, and abundance in mind. A wicker seating area offers comfort and a relaxing place to unwind. The plantings include crape myrtle trees, knockout roses, evergreen junipers, and flowering annuals. All of the planters contain low-voltage up-lighting for a dramatic nighttime effect. Read more about this garden on my blog, www.amberfreda.com.

Soft and wild planting using a mix of herbs combined with a hot colour pallet. A mix of elements was used to give a boho look and relaxed feel to this small terrace. Every leaf and petal had to earn their place as the space was seen through large glass doors leading from a home office. Black trailing Suffinia were mixed with orange and red Begonias, Sage, Thyme and Rosemary. Tall Olive trees gave a little height and interest to the design.

A lush rooftop garden overlooking Boston’s historic Back Bay offers stunning views of the Prudential and John Hancock Tower. The character of the site is amplified by the dramatic contrast between architecture and sky. Mature magnolias underplanted with hostas form a threshold into the historic brownstone. Weathered-wood planting beds spill with new hardy shrubs, perennials, grasses, and herbs; a paper birch and a wind-sculpted spruce lend dramatic texture, structure, and scale to the space. Rugosa rose, juniper, lilac, peony, iris, perovskia, artemisia, nepeta, heuchera, sedum, and ornamental grasses survive year round and paint a brilliant summer-long display. A collection of new and antique containers dot the rooftop, and a terrific orchid collection rests beneath the birch tree during summer months.
