Design, installation and photography by Chris Kolb of Ark Gardens. Here, Chris designed a patchwork quilt garden with a low hedge of native Yucca filamentosa. He created patches of different plants including culinary herbs such as Golden Oregano, Thyme and French Tarragon (in foreground). You can also see native Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis) blooming white near the landing stoop.

Citrus trees do well among the native grasses and foliage. Because the natives need no fertilizers or pesticides to thrive, fruit is also chemical free.

Vegetable and flower garden with Olla irrigation system. Water seeps through the walls of unglazed 'Olla', these vessels can be used to irrigate plants. The Olla is buried in the ground next to the roots of the plant to be irrigated. The Olla is filled with water, which gradually seeps into the soil to water the roots of the plant. It is an efficient method, since no water is lost to evaporation or run-off.

The beautifully laid out hardscaping and boulder work was done by a UBC architecture student Jared Skoreyko prior to our arrival. We updated the planting as per the client's request for a low maintenance edible landscape. Included are lingonberry, salal, rhubarb and pineapple guava, which balance the priorities of providing seasonal edibles and maintaining a pleasing four season streetside aesthetic.

This active family with two young boys wanted a place to grow food, lounge in the front yard with friends and have blooms upon blooms of midwestern flowers to enjoy. Custom tuteurs, vegetable beds and benches frame the center of the garden, surrounded by low maintenance flowering shrubs, trees and perennials. Evergreen grasses form the understory of the borders. A bulb layer will be installed summer of 2017. Photo credit: Naomi Goodman
