Garden design and landscaping Amersham. This beautiful home in Amersham needed a garden to match. Karl stepped in to offer a complete garden design for both front and back gardens. Once the design was approved Karl and his team were also asked to carry out the landscaping works. With a large space to cover Karl chose to use mass planting to help create new zones within the garden. This planting was also key to getting lots of colours spread throughout the spaces. In these new zones, Karl was able to use more structural materials to make the spaces more defined as well as private. These structural elements include raised Millboard composite decking which also forms a large bench. This creates a secluded entertaining zone within a large bespoke Technowood black pergola. Within the planting specification, Karl allowed for a wide range of trees. Here is a flavour of the trees and a taste of the flowering shrubs… Acer – Bloodgood, Fireglow, Saccharinum for its rapid growth and palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’ (one of my favourites). Cercis candensis ‘Forest Pansy’ Cornus contraversa ‘Variegata’, ‘China Girl’, ‘Venus’ (Hybrid). Magnolia grandiflora ‘Goliath’ Philadelphus ‘Belle Etoile’ Viburnum bodnantensa ‘Dawn’, Dentatum ‘Blue Muffin’ (350 Kgs plus), Opulus ‘Roseum’ Philadelphus ‘Manteau d’Hermine’ You will notice in the planting scheme there are various large rocks. These are weathered limestone rocks from CED. We intentionally planted Soleirolia soleirolii and ferns around them to encourage more moss to grow on them. The brief of this project was very clear and simple. The clients wanted to transform their overgrown and non functional back yard to a usuable and practical space. The location is in Rye, Vic. The solution was to build tiered retaining walls to stabilize the slope and create level and usuable platforms. This proved challanging as the soil mostly contains sand, especially here on the lower end of the peninsula, which made excavating easy however difficult to retain the cut once excavated. Therefore the retaining walls had to be constructed in stages, bottom wall to top wall, back filling and stabilizing the hill side as the next wall got erected. The end result met all expectations of the clients and the back yard was transformed from an unusable slope to a functional and secure space.

For this lovely project the clients wanted to pack a lot into this compact space. A space for the adults to entertain and somewhere for the kids to play. As the garden is very much on display from the kitchen it needed to feel like a natural extension of the internal living space and a pleasure to look out onto all year round. We expect so much from gardens of this size so they need to be hard working spaces. To include all that was requested takes balance in the composition and a considered design, less is more. The garden will effectively be broken down into dining, relaxing, play areas for the kids and a great planting scheme, of course! In smaller gardens you want to make the biggest impact with the planting with bold planting beds, which is exactly what we can do in this space, the beds will be full of lush evergreen ferns with pockets of flowering perennials.

NORWOOD | FRONT GARDEN Breath of fresh air | Slick upgrade for front garden Front Garden Areas Our client brief was to give their tired ‘old’ garden a complete makeover. A new driveway to replace the old red brick drive, create a garden out of an unused passageway style lifeless garden. We guided our clients to embrace a new fresh look whilst looking back to the heritage style for design detail and quirky interest. The new driveway is polished concrete with strips of bluestone cobbles which link the new bluestone pathway to the front door. The cobble feature harks back to the 1900’s brickwork on the northern side wall. Here there are small feature bricks running parallel with the ‘old reds’ giving the wall visual interest and a quirky detail. A new front fence with a little more height for balance to the gable. The entrance entices visitors through a generous gate to polished concrete steppers planted with dwarf mondo grass. Newly painted driveway fence planted with Star Jasmine to create a green wall along the northern fence line. New lawn and garden beds cool the western garden areas incorporating classic modern garden design and lighting. There is an excellent balance between soft and hard landscaping. The back garden for an innovative property in Fulham Cemetery - the house featured on Channel 4's Grand Designs in January 2021. The design had to enhance the relationship with the bold, contemporary architecture and open up a dialogue with the wild green space beyond its boundaries. Seen here in summer, this lush space is an immersive journey through a woodland edge planting scheme.
