The IdealMow Meadow of native dune sedge that fills this bio cleans the water as it percolates, which it accomplishes quickly, leaving no standing water.

This garden had an historic collection of native California and Mexican fan palms, clustered around a water-needy lawn. We removed the lawn, added a new layer of drought tolerant smaller palms, and an underplanting of mediterranean type shrubs and perennials.

A previously completely concreted space has been transformed with the addition of dramatic planting areas designed to facilitate access to each property from this shared courtyard. Planting is designed to look good year-round with Spiral Standard Bay trees punctuating the space.

A Site-Cast Concrete Fountain marks the entry to the garden adjacent to the Court / Corten House. It engages the senses with the movement and sound of water, and provides an environment for water plants to grow and birds to bathe.

Native Shrubs and Monterey Oaks separate the garden from the street front on Rio Grande. A steel canopy rusts in sympathy with the Court / Corten House, and will be eventually shrouded in vines to shade the seating area below.

The canopy is made of structural steel and an expanded mesh. It is designed become a pergola for vines, and to provide a generously shaded "outdoor room" for neighborhood use in summer months.

A Heritage Live Oak Tree shades both the garden of the Court / Corten House, and its more public neighbor. Simple ground-covers of gravel and red decomposed granite encourage furnishings and inhabitation, while low barriers and plantings provide various measures of privacy.

After several years working in the landscape industry, Rodney Stoutenger grew frustrated with the current “status quo” most companies follow. Rodney Stoutenger started Native Edge Landscape out of a desire to change the way landscape projects work from the ground up. His dedicated hands on approach has guided Native Edge Landscape from a crew of one, to a team of 12 (and growing all the time).

The Texas French Bread Garden shares a landscape with the Court / Corten House. A low wall of board-formed concrete separates the projects, and serves as a backdrop to native shrubs that will continue to grow and provide visual separation between the two projects.

Tables made up of Raw Steel and Ipe have been custom-fabricated for the Texas French Bread Garden. These can be moved and arranged in a variety of ways to accommodate public use. A ground-cover of decomposed red granite further aids the flexibility of the social space.
